EarthLink CEO Garry Betty watched his 2003 annual bonus surge by 76 percent to $346,790--up from $196,590 in 2002, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The bonus came despite the company's laying off 25 percent of its work force in 2003 and eliminating an additional 1,300 call center jobs in January 2004. EarthLink said it would outsource most of its call center functions to various companies in the United States, India and the Philippines. In addition to his bonus, Betty also took home a base salary of $621,154 in 2003, up from 600,000 in 2002.
