Digital joins mobile Pentium II pack
When Intel releases its highly anticipated mobile Pentium II chip, Digital will be among pack of vendors unveiling new notebook models.
Digital's HiNote VP 765 notebook will be powered by a 266-MHz mobile Pentium II processor and priced starting at $3,999, according to sources close to the company. The system will feature 32MB of memory, a 4GB hard drive, a 13.3-inch active-matrix monitor, and a CD-ROM. The VP 765 will come bundled with either Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0 operating software.
Tomorrow's release has received considerable hype for the past few weeks, but some analysts are beginning to voice concerns about the chip's high power consumption. Others believe that new Pentium II-based portables will be in oversupply and also cause consumers to pass over older Pentium MMX notebooks.
Undaunted, Digital will compete with the rest of the major notebook vendors. In anticipation for the chip's release, a laundry list of makers are preparing to equip their notebook lines with the new chip, including Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, Dell, IBM, NEC, Toshiba, Fujitsu, and Acer.
