Dell Computer plans to standardize its internal operations on BMC Software's computer management software, the companies said Monday. The software, which will replace offerings from several companies, will be used to handle tasks including managing databases, backing up data, scheduling computing jobs, managing servers and storage and connecting different applications.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Dell said it would increase its efficiency with the switch. Dell also sells BMC's systems management services to its own customers.
