Dell debuts low-cost server
Dell Computer, in a price war with Compaq Computer, released this week a new low-end server with a price tag starting at $699. The single-processor PowerEdge 500SC, designed for smaller groups, comes with either an 800MHz Celeron or 1GHz Pentium III chip, Dell said. The system, though, has some higher-end features, such as two high-speed 64-bit 66MHz PCI slots--faster than those used on desktop computers--automatic rebooting when the system crashes and support for 2GB of memory. The model uses the ServerSet LE 3 chipset from Broadcom subsidiary ServerWorks to enable the high-end PCI.
