Compaq to supply workstations to NASA

Compaq Computer, as part of a $4.7 Lockheed Martin contract with NASA's Johnson Space Center, will supply the space agency with 475 workstations. Unlike PCs, workstations are designed for specific graphics-intensive tasks. The XP900 and XP-1000 Alpha workstations and 635 P1210 color monitors are part of Mission Control upgrades for space shuttle and International Space Station operations. The new models will replace some existing Alpha workstations in service since 1993, Compaq said. Lockheed is in the process of installing the first 129 workstations, with plans to complete the project by September.
