Compaq partners with StorageTek

StorageTek announces an agreement with Compaq for developing advanced storage technologies for Windows NT.

begun research and development on several fronts, StorageTek said today. The goal is to make the resulting architecture and products work with storage products from a broad range of vendors, including StorageTek and Compaq.

Advanced storage systems used by high-end corporate "enterprise" customers consist of large-capacity storage devices, typically composed of disk drives, and a sophisticated software component for managing the storage infrastructure.

As PC vendors such as Compaq and Dell Computer enter this high-end corporate market, the ability to handle large amounts of data intelligently becomes increasingly important. Microsoft's Windows NT will be the operating system that runs on many of the server computers offered by vendors such as Compaq.

"Compaq's vision is that storage will become a service provided by a [network] that has distributed intelligence," said Vic Mahadevan, vice president and general manager of Compaq's Enterprise Storage and Options Division, in a prepared statement.

"Building the Storage Network will require Compaq's partnerships with industry leaders such as StorageTek," he added.

StorageTek has also cut deals with IBM as well as other large computer vendors.

"The two companies will work together to fully characterize customer requirements for [a standard] open storage architecture and to identify opportunities for new product, technology, or solution development," the companies said.
