Buzz Out Loud 1238: Smell the light? (podcast)

On today's show, it turns out flies are getting smell-o-vision before we do. Whatever. Also, the next Apple TV is coming, and you won't believe who thinks it's a dud (hint: Brian Tong is on the show). The iPad launches globally, Skype Mobile is coming to Android just in time to save us from the newly $5-a-month Qik. Plus, Rafe thinks Apple is angling to kill OS X. Find out why.

This is in regards to the teacher and facebook episode. I am a online distant student at the University of Florida and in one of my classes the teacher has a twitter account specifically for that class. He told us if we have a question abut anything to send him a tweet during class and he will answer the question during the live class (the class lectures are recorded). I think this is a very useful tool in this situation and I reluctantly had to sign up for twitter because of this class. :-)
Thanks guys for being awesome!

Hey Buzz crew;

I must commend you on your stance and reporting of the incidents regarding FoxConn and their employees. Simply put, the actions and suicides of the employees at FoxConn is a subject that few if any journalists are able to accurately describe without creating a bias and/or ignoring the facts. However any raise employees receive in wage/salary is going to produce absolutely no long term results. Do any research on employment and you will quickly see the amount you pay an employee has no correlation to their job morale. FoxConn will have to improve working conditions and the treatment of employees if they want to see an improvement to the morale of employees. If Apple, Dell or any company wants to improve the lives of employees; they should focus on the treatment of workers instead of the money the employee receives.

Hey BOL,
This is Ken from Dallas, TX. I know this is a two day old story but I thought I needed to add my two cents about the Foxconn suicide story.

I worked at Foxconn for about 4 months and everything Rafe said about the working conditions are true. It's not so much that it's physically demanding, but it is emotionally and somewhat psychologically demanding.
The engineers and managers are in your face, and always always ALWAYS looking over your shoulder to see if you're doing it right, and when you're not they chew you out for it. I worked in the repair department, fixing bad units coming off the line. There are no chairs, and if I leaned against the table to rest (discretely) they would notice and get in my face.
My heart goes out to the families of those who have lost family members.

Love the show,
Ken
