Be rockets on Sun deal

Be Inc. (Nasdaq: BEOS) shares jumped over 30 percent in early trading Tuesday on the news that its BeIA Internet appliance platform passed Sun Microsystems'(Nasdaq: SUNW) certification requirements.

The certification will allow the software maker's BeIA appliance platform to be used in devices that use PersonalJava technology.

PersonalJava is used in personal Internet devices for web-browsing, e-mail and e-commerce transactions.

The BeIA platform contains a web browser and playback for video and audio. Compatibility is geared towards the creation of new personal consumer devices such as set-top boxes and smart phones, rather than desktop computers.

Shares of were up 1 to 4 in the morning session.
