Basis, ending service Dec. 31, offers B1 fitness watch refunds
Owners of the B1 Band can now return the device and get their money back. Basis also reminds customers it's shutting down its fitness platform.
The Basis B1 Band will no longer function after December 31.
Intel-owned Basis issued a full recall of its Peak fitness watch in August out of concern that it could overheat and cause burns. The company also announced plans to shut down its fitness platform on December 31, which would leave existing Basis customers in the dark. While the initial recall didn't affect older Basis devices, the company is now offering full refunds to Basis B1 Band owners.
"Today we are letting you know that we will soon stop support for our legacy watch, the Basis B1," the company wrote in an email to Basis customers. "The B1 has been a central part of our community for 4 wonderful years and we made the difficult decision to stop all services effective December 31, 2016. This means that your watch will no longer function after that date. We know that many of you will be disappointed by our decision and we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this will cause."
To return your device and obtain a refund for your Basis B1 watch and authorized accessories, customers can visit this link. You can also download your old fitness data by visiting this page until December 31. It's recommended that you download the data to your computer, rather than a smartphone. Data will be available in the form of a .csv file, which can be opened in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
