Baan snags Oracle exec for global units
The struggling business software maker says it has hired former Oracle executive Mike Shinya to head its Europe, Middle East, and Africa region operations.
Shinya, 41, will have the overall responsibility for operations comprised of about 16 countries, the company said.
Shinya joins Baan from Oracle where he was sales operations director for Oracle's Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. He joined the Santa Clara, California-based company in 1996 and also held the role as vice president of U.K. commercial sales where he was responsible for accounts representing 80 percent of all of Oracle's business in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Shinya is the latest in a string of Oracle executives to leave the database software company.
Last week, Oracle senior executive Polly Sumner left the company to become president and chief operating officer at software start-up AlphaBlox.
In August, Corio, which competes in the growing ASP, or application service provider market, snagged three top Oracle executives. As reported, Corio named Oracle's former senior vice president of worldwide industrial applications as the company's new chief executive. Corio's vice president of marketing Kirk Krappe and its vice president of operations Thomas Spingola were also both former Oracle executives.
To combat the stiff competition, Oracle gave healthy packages to its president Ray Lane and other top executives. In a recent Securities Exchange Commission proxy filing, Oracle board members wrote, "In fiscal year 1999... the Compensation Committee's purview was expanded, in part, to help the company attract, develop, and retain talented executive personnel in an extremely competitive market."
Shinya, a 20-year veteran in the EMEA applications market, has built sales and support strategies for Oracle and other organizations, including IBM and Xerox, Baan said. He spent about 10 years at IBM U.K. where he was responsible for regional sales and channel management.
Baan said its EMEA region includes Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
