AST today joined the ranks of other major notebook manufacturers by announcing its own notebook computer aimed at the consumer market.

The new Ascentia J20 notebook will feature a 100-MHz Pentium processor, 11.3-inch SVGA dual-scan LCD screen, 8MB RAM and a 540MB hard drive. Other features include built-in infrared port and 16-bit Sound Blaster compatible audio support.

AST's new notebook uses a nickel-metal hydride battery and weighs just under six pounds. Initially, the Ascentia J20 will be offered in the U.S. through Sam's Club and Price Costco for $1,799.

AST's announcement follows recent consumer market-specific notebook PC introductions from vendors such as Compaq and IBM.
