Apple's Mac shipments up 23.3 percent in the U.S.

Apple increased its Mac shipments 23.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009, giving it a 7.5 percent market share, according to market research firm Gartner.

Market research firm Gartner released a report Wednesday showing U.S. market share for the top computer companies.

According to the report, Apple shipped almost 1.5 million Macs for the fourth quarter of 2009, up from the 1.2 million shipped during the same period last year. The 23.3 percent increase in shipments landed Apple the No. 5 spot in the top computer makers.

Apple's overall market share for the quarter dropped slightly from 7.7 percent in 2008 to 7.5 percent in 2009.

Apple wasn't the only company seeing gains in the fourth quarter of 2009. HP (45.9 percent), Acer (48.4 percent), and Toshiba (70.7 percent) also saw huge gains during the quarter. Dell had the smallest percentage gain of 5.5 percent.

HP came out as the No. 1 vendor in the U.S. based on shipments. Dell landed in the No. 2 spot, followed by Acer, Toshiba, and Apple.

There were 19.8 million computers shipped by all vendors in the fourth quarter of 2009, up from 15.6 million in the same period last year.
