Apple vs. Android argument leads to bloody fight, police say

Occasionally in the comments section of these pages, readers express their emotional and therefore irrational support for their favored smartphone brands.

It can make for pulsating and even enervating reading.

I'm not aware, however, that these commenters subsequently meet up, shout at each other in person and bash each other with broken beer bottles.

This, sadly, is the allegation being leveled against Elias Acevedo of Tulsa, Okla. The police report, detailed by the Smoking Gun, offers that he and his roommate, Jiaro Mendez, got into an argument in a parking lot on Tuesday.

The report says that the victim told the police that the two men "started arguing about which phone was better, the iPhone or the Android."

You might imagine that this could have been handled in a civilized manner. By comparing specs, for example. Or by asking someone with taste to examine both phones.

Instead, Acevedo allegedly grabbed a beer bottle and smashed it over Mendez's head, causing significant bleeding. Acevedo is also accused of stealing Mendez's car.

Both men were taken to hospital. When the police found Acevedo, he was allegedly covered in blood and had some lacerations. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

News 6 in Oklahoma reports that both men were released from hospital after their injuries were deemed not life-threatening.

I have contacted Tulsa police to ask for the latest on the case, including whether there is information as to which man was the Apple fan and which the Androider. I will update, should I hear.

Though alcohol is said to have fueled the escalation of this less-than-smart phone dispute, I wonder if it also shows the ultimate futility of such arguments.
