AMD, UMC team on chip design

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said Monday that it will work with Taiwanese foundry United Microelectronics Corp. to develop processes for making chips using larger, 12-inch wafers. The two companies said they will implement the technology at a joint manufacturing facility in Singapore that is set to in 2005.

UMC said it will also use the technology at its other facilities, including a Taiwanese plant that is already in volume production using the 12-inch wafers.
