Amazon's German site, Amazon.de, introduced Search Inside, which lets visitors search and preview the text of more than 100,000 books.

Amazon praised publishers cooperating with the program and warned others that they risked losing sales. "Customers value Search Inside and prefer books participating in the program over those that are not participating," Ralf Kleber, managing director of Amazon.de, said in a statement. "For the 12 months after Amazon.com launched Search Inside in October 2003, sales growth for titles included in Search Inside outpaced growth for titles not in the program by 7 percent."
