Aiming for easier management

Oracle is rolling out a slew of new administration and management tools and services for its products.

Oracle wants to make managing its business applications and databases as easy as pie.

From its user group's conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, Oracle announced this week that it is rolling out a slew of new administration and management tools and services for its products.

The new products include such items as a quick installation system called One-Hour Install, the Enterprise Management Pack for Oracle Applications, and an implementation wizard to guide users through the set-up process.

Oracle's new services include Oracle ExpertOnline, a program for small companies that allows them to outsource some or all of their database management needs for what Oracle claims is "less than hiring a database administrator." Also new to the services business is OracleLifecycle, a customized support service for Oracle Application users.

One-hour install allows users to install a preconfigured file system for Oracle Applications and accompanying technologies like the Oracle8 database, application server, and forms server. It is to be available next month with Oracle Applications Release 11.

The implementation wizard is a device that guides users through a customization of their applications. It also contains workflow mechanisms to more easily manage the process.

The management pack is an addition to Oracle Enterprise Manager 2.0. It is designed to let system administrators manage their entire computing environment from the host, to the operating system, database, and enterprise resource planning applications.
