Professor's online course delves into all things 'Doctor Who'

A new MOOC -- or massive open online course -- will teach both Whovians and newbies a thing or two about "Doctor Who."

The course, titled "Doctor Who in the Digital Age," will be taught by Professor Anthony Rotolo, director of the online masters in communications program at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. It will run from January through April and will explore the history, evolution and cultural impact of the long-running BBC series, Rotolo tells the Daily Orange.

The free course -- which is not an official Syracuse class -- will be offered both in-person to Syracuse students as an independent study class and online for Whovians across the universe. Both in-person and online students will view classic and contemporary "Doctor Who" episodes, including rare clips and lost stories that have been recently unearthed.

The class will examine how "Doctor Who" has evolved in the Digital Age, why it has managed to last more than 50 years, how it deals with changes in culture and technology, and how it has uses "futuristic and alien concepts to deliver social commentary on current affairs."

If that doesn't sound like -- as the Doctor would say -- "timey-wimey" fun, I don't know what does. You can sign up to take part in Rotolo's course on his webpage, but don't blink(!) or you might miss the registration window.
