Martin Gagen, who oversaw Asia Pacific and U.S. operations for 3i, a venture capital and investment group, has resigned. Although not as well know as many U.S. venture firms, England's is one of the oldest venture firms, founded in the wake of World War II. In recent years, it has placed investments in nanotechnology and alternative energy. Allan Ferguson will take over U.S. operations while Chris Rowlands will take over the Asia Pacific wing.

In an e-mail, Gagen said he plans to start work on a master's degree in history and philosophy at Stanford this September.
