3Com chief joins AMD board
The semiconductor company appoints Bruce Claflin, president and CEO of the networking equipment maker, to its board of directors.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company elected Claflin to the post at a board meeting held Friday. Claflin also serves on the board of directors of Time Warner Telecom.
"Bruce enhances the composition of our board and brings a wealth of knowledge and complementary industry insights to our team," W.J. Sanders III, chairman of AMD, said in a statement. "We will leverage his highly respected expertise of the enterprise computing market to help us develop our strategic thrusts into this segment, while delivering higher performing semiconductor solutions to the world's leading companies."
Claflin joins the AMD board at a time when the company appears to be realizing its long-standing goal of stealing market share in the microprocessor market from dominant rival Intel.
"AMD's board of directors has assisted the transformation and guided the company through very challenging market conditions," Claflin said in a statement. "AMD is poised for success and I look forward to adding to AMD's legacy as a great, innovative company."
Claflin first joined 3Com as president and chief operating officer in August 1998. He then became CEO of 3Com in January 2001. Prior to that, Claflin worked at Digital Equipment where he served as senior vice president and general manager of sales and marketing. Claflin joined Digital after working at IBM for 22 years.
