Video games have evolved over the years from the early arcade styles to cutscenes fit for the big screen. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the opening title sequences of games. In just over two minutes, you can experience the entire history of game title design and marvel at the changes.
This super-cut of title sequences spans 35 games starting with Donkey Kong in 1981 and ending with The Last of Us from this year. It was created by editor Ian Albinson from Art of the Title as a companion piece to a Gamercamp presentation on how cinema has influenced the creation of gaming titles.
There are plenty of iconic and recognizable titles, like Mario Bros. from 1983 and Metal Gear Solid from 1997, but there are also a few games you may have forgotten about. When was the last time you played Day of The Tentacle from 1993? The title sequence has a fun, cartoon-y look to it.
There's a good variety here, from the realistic look of BioShock to the totally out-there fever dream of Katamari Damacy. It will make you reconsider game titles. They're not just something to get past on your way to blasting baddies, they are an art form unto themselves.
