Stephen King fans got a taste of the much anticipated gun-slinging, sci-fi, western based on his novel series, The Dark Tower, on Wednesday.

In the upcoming film, adapted from King's eight-book series of the same name published between 1982 and 2004, Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey face off as bitter enemies in an alternate universe. Like the novels, "The Dark Tower" movie is a mix of several genres including horror, science fiction and westerns.

Elba plays Roland Deschain, the last Gunslinger tasked with saving civilization. He befriends an adolescent boy who has managed to jump dimensions into this alternate world. The boy, Jake Chambers (played by newcomer Tom Taylor), and the Gunslinger embark on a quest to save The Dark Tower, a structure that protects both worlds.

But they must contend with the devilish villain Walter o'Dim, aka the Man in Black played by McConaughey, who wants to destroy the tower.

Elba and McConaughey teased the trailer yesterday in an Twitter exchange. The film appears to feature a lot of Elba reloading his guns and McConaughey looking displeased. It will be released in the US August 4, in Australia on August 17, and in the UK on August 18.
