'Supergirl' flies back to TV, with 'Glee' star in the lead role
Move over, Superman! Crime-fighting cousin Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, is coming to CBS in a new drama from the producers of "Arrow" and "Flash."
Make room for another superhero on your already crowded costumed-crime-fighters TV lineup. CBS has picked up the new "Supergirl" series for its 2015-2016 season. Melissa Benoist ("Glee") stars in the role of Kara Zor-El, otherwise known as Supergirl. (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET.)
The "Supergirl" series is headed up by executive producer Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "The Flash"), along with executive producers Sarah Schechter ("The Flash") and Ali Adler ("Chuck"). Berlanti and Adler joined Andrew Kreisberg ("Arrow," "The Flash") to co-write the TV pilot.
Glen Winter -- who also worked on "Arrow," "The Flash" and "Smallville" -- directed the "Supergirl" pilot.
The pilot follows Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El, as she decides to come out of hiding and use her superhuman powers as a crime-fighting hero after escaping from Krypton and arriving on Earth years ago, Entertainment Weekly reported Wednesday.
Fans of Supergirl could be in for a real treat judging by the cast lineup. Most notably, original Supergirl Helen Slater from the 1984 "Supergirl" and Dean Cain ("Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman") have been cast in mystery roles.
The cast roster also includes Calista Flockhart ("Ally McBeal") as Cat Grant, Laura Benanti ("Nashville") as Alura Zor-El, Mehcad Brooks ("Desperate Housewives") as James "Jimmy" Olsen, Chyler Leigh ("Grey's Anatomy") as Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, and David Harewood ("Selfie") as Hank Henshaw.
The TV pilot will also feature guest stars Owain Yeoman ("The Mentalist") as Vartox, Faran Tahir ("Warehouse 13") as The Commander, and Jeremy Jordan ("Smash") as Winslow "Winn" Schott, aka DC Comics' Toyman.
Even though "Supergirl" airs on CBS, Berlanti reminded fans that she lives in the same DC Comics universe as "The Flash" and "Arrow," which could mean possible crossover episodes with those superhero shows that air on The CW.
