Snikt! An X-Men fan won't have any problems with bad guys or blister packaging after creating his own spectacular Wolverine claws.

Wolverine returns to cinema screens this month in " X-Men: Days of Future Past", uniting the older X-Men headed by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen with their youthful counterparts, led by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of Professor Xavier and Magneto.

The ageless Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, is endowed with a metal skeleton, allowing him to extrude three metal spikes from each hand. British inventor and TV presenter Colin Furze -- who appeared in Sky's " Gadget's Geeks" with CNET's own Ian Morris and Rory Reid -- has built his own version, using compressed air from a backpack to 'pop' the 12-inch stainless steel spikes. Click the video to see the Marvel-inspired gadget fiend in action:

The blades both deploy and retract automatically at the touch of a button held in the hand, and just like in the comic and movies the blades even spread slightly rather than shooting out straight. They're certainly more convincing than the CGI claws in some of the movies featuring the ol' Canucklehead... click play on the video below to see how it's done.

Furze promises more DIY X-Men kit on his YouTube channel shortly -- which X-Man will he go for? Gambit's exploding playing cards? Cyclops' laser-blasting sunglasses? Or Professor X's wheelchair? Let me know in the comments which X-Men character you think has the coolest kit you'd like to have a go on.
