Philips' next-generation screens
Philips Components said Tuesday that its polymer-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology is now available for small mobile devices such as cell phones and pagers. The display has a 65-by-102-pixel resolution to meet basic mobile phone requirements. Philips describes the screen as extremely bright and easy to read at any angle. OLEDs consist of a series of polymer-based thin films sandwiched between two electrodes, one of which is transparent--most often glass. Many companies are working on OLED technology, which holds promise because of its ability to display a wide range of colors while using little energy.
