Lego locks in 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Hobbit' deals
We don't know much about what the global toy brand will be doing.
Lego plus "Lord of the Rings." Need we say more?
It's not at all clear exactly what Lego has planned, but the iconic toy company said today that it is launching in 2012 a new LOTR line of, well, something.
Still, it seems obvious that what we'll be seeing is a "Lord of the Rings" themed Lego set, or sets. And that's because the extremely cagey Web site for the project features what I can only presume is Frodo--a Lego version of him, that is--holding on to a very large shiny ring.
This is great news for LOTR and Lego fans the world over. Of course, it would be better if we knew some additional details like pricing, timing, and specifics. But I think just knowing that soon enough kids--and lets be honest, adults, too--will soon be sitting on floors everywhere popping plastic bricks together and chanting, "My precious."
At the same time, the U.K.-based publication Metro is reporting that Lego has actually inked a deal not just for "Lord of the Rings," but also for "The Hobbit," and that the contract is centered around two upcoming "Hobbit" movies.
"Lego games based on movies and comics have always done well both critically and commercially," wrote Metro. "Lego Star Wars was the start of it all, but since then we've had Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, Lego Harry Potter, and Lego Pirates Of The Caribbean."
