Pokemon Go was Google Play's top game of 2016

Because, of course, it was. Also topping lists of most popular stuff on Google's online entertainment marketplace: "Game of Thrones" and "Deadpool."

There was never any doubt here. The game that caused injuries, took over Comic Con, and made people stumble upon dead bodies was the most popular of 2016, according to Google.

Pokemon Go was the top trending game worldwide this year on the search giant's Play store, where people can download apps, games, music, movies and books.

It's that time of the year again -- to look back on the last 12 months and try to figure out what exactly happened, through the time-honored lens of year-end lists. Google on Thursday released its annual lists of top content on the its Play store. The lists give us a window into what the residents of planet Earth (well, at least the ones that use Google's Android mobile software) were thinking in 2016. Behold, psychology through pop culture.

It seems people were very anxious this year. Makes sense, after a looooong election in the US, deaths of legendary musicians, and, well, all that is Ryan Lochte. The top two songs were "Stressed Out" by Twenty One Pilots and "Sorry" by Justin Bieber.

Everything else was probably as you'd expect: In TV, people liked gratuitous sex and violence ("Game of Thrones"). In apps, they liked photo filters and selfies (No. 1: Face Changer 2, No. 2: Lumyer photo and selfie editor).

One thing that might be surprising, though, was Deadpool coming in strong. The Marvel superhero topped two lists: Movies, beating out "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and new books, with "Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe," by Cullen Bunn.
