Universal Wi-Fi in a city with a budget crunch? Don't bet on it soon.

My hometown mayor, Gavin Newsom, says he wants free Wi-Fi for every single person in San Francisco. Comcast and SBC Communications are going to – well, let's see – how about freak out. I'd cancel my phone service in a second, and hello Vonage it would be.

Of course, saying and doing are two very different things. Free wireless for everyone would mean enormous bandwidth bills, and San Francisco is having a budget crisis already. So donÂ’t hold your breath.
