'Fear the Walking Dead' in ominous first trailer for zombie spin-off

The spin-off to hit show "The Walking Dead" goes back to the beginning of the infection that turned everybody into undead cannibals.

"Hope you got your flu shot. A strange virus is going around..." The first trailer for the "Walking Dead" spin-off takes us back to the days when an overwhelming craving for flesh is about to make things difficult for people who'd prefer not to end up as a tasty snack for slavering zombies.

"Fear the Walking Dead" is the title of the new TV show from AMC, set in the post-apocalyptic zombie-infested world of "The Walking Dead". The trailer hints that the new series will return to the origins of the infection that has turned America's population into shambling "walkers", hungry to chow down on living flesh.

The main characters are two single parents, played by Cliff Curtis and telly veteran Kim Dickens, with their kids along for the ride. The new series hits TV screens this summer, with two six-episode seasons already ordered.

"The Walking Dead" is based on the Image comic by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. Originally developed by Frank Darabont, the show began in 2010 and ended its fifth season this weekend.

Both the comic and the original show of "The Walking Dead" open after the infection has already torn through the US, when main character Rick Grimes wakes from a coma and finds himself in a wrecked but relatively unpopulated post-apocalyptic world. By contrast, the trailer for spin-off "Fear the Walking Dead" places us in Los Angeles, suggesting we may see mass carnage as the infection hits a densely-populated metropolis.
