New 'Planet of the Apes' Title, Cast Revealed
The film is scheduled to be released in 2024.
It's been five years since the release of War for the Planet of the Apes, and 20th Century Studios announced Thursday that the next title in the franchise will be Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
"A new saga begins," the studio tweeted. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which will be set many years after War for the Planet of the Apes, starts production in October and is planned to come out in 2024, the studio said. The movie will star Owen Teague, Freya Allen and Peter Macon, and be directed by Wes Ball.
The Planet of the Apes franchise, based on the 1963 novel La Planète des Singes by Pierre Boulle, has generated more than $1.7 billion worldwide since the release of the first film in 1968.
"'Planet of the Apes' is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history," Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios, said in a news release. "With 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' we are privileged to continue the series' tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema."
