David Tennant won't need this device to screw with Jessica Jones' mind as the Marvel villain Kilgrave. BBC

From beloved Time Lord to purple villain? Actor David Tennant -- who rose to fame with his popular portrayal as the Tenth Doctor in "Doctor Who," has been cast as Kilgrave in " Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones," debuting on Netflix this year.

He'll appear opposite Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter, who will play Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in the 13-episode series.

For those Marvel fans who know their comics, Kilgrave could be a reference to Zebediah Killgrave, otherwise called the Purple Man. This baddie manipulated Jones in the worst way possible by controlling her mind when she was still a costumed superhero.

What impact Kilgrave will have on Jones should prove to be interesting television, to say the least. And if Marvel plans to stay true to the comics, we may end up seeing Tennant as Kilgrave in upcoming Marvel movies that use the "Civil War" storyline. We're looking at you, Avengers.

In the upcoming Netflix show, Jones has abandoned her superhero side and become a licensed private investigator, opening up her own firm called Alias Investigations.

"Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City," according to Marvel.com.

Tennant hasn't shied away from non-hero roles before. In the 2005 film "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," Tennant plays Barty Crouch, Jr. -- a Death Eater and minion to Lord Voldemort. In the ITV drama "Secret Smile," he plays the psychopath Brendan. Most recently, Tennant starred in "Broadchurch" and its American adaptation, "Gracepoint."

"I'm so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character," Melissa Rosenberg, executive producer and showrunner, said on Marvel.com. "He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He'll make Kilgrave a truly original villain."
