First Look: Yelp for iPhone 3GS Monocle Feature

1:27 /

Scott Stein reveals a secret augmented reality view for the Yelp app for the iPhone 3GS.

[ Music ] >> Hi, I'm Scott Stine, senior associate editor at CNET.com. And I'm showing off Monocle, a new feature for Yelp for the iPhone 3GS. Now turns out that Augmented Reality, which is the idea of layering data on top of what you see in the real world was not supposed to be a feature that was going to be in an iPhone until OS3.1. It took Yelp to suddenly surprise launch such a feature inside their current 3.0 app as an Easter egg. If you launch Yelp right now and you have an iPhone 3GS, you can shake it three times or up to four or five times to launch the feature. Monocle takes the outside world through the built in camera and over lay actual restaurant information around you that coordinates with GPS and the built in compass on the 3GS to navigate around you as you turn and look for a restaurant. Just a direct way of looking at the world around you. Now while the actual accuracy needs a little bit of tweaking from our experience, it's the beginning of a really cool wave of apps that will allow you to look at the world and pinpoint tagged items and navigate the world around you for subway stops, restaurants, maybe even social networking and find out where your friends are. Check it out. It's available now on the App Store. And even though Apple didn't exactly want this to launch right away, you can expect a wave of this type of future tech to be happening really soon. I'm Scott Stine and I've been showing off Yelp and its new feature Monocle on the iPhone 3GS. ^M00:01:25 [ Music ]
