First Look: This Dropcam Pro competitor falls a bit short2:00 /
Samsung's newest IP camera is full of features, but skimps.
[MUSIC] Hi. I'm Megan Morgan for c/net Appliances. Here with a Samsung SmartCam HD Pro. This little camera is designed to compete directly with the Dropcam Pro. It costs $189 compared with the Dropcam's $199 and offers a lot of the same features. The first thing you'll notice about the Samsung model in comparison to the Dropcam Pro is that it looks kind of like a smoke detector with a cheap plastic base. The Dropcam is a lot more substantial even though more streamlined. I just like the way it looks and feels a lot better. As far as features are concerned though, I think the Samsung is pretty competitive with the Dropcam It offers a lot of the same things, the same 1080p resolution. But, one thing I really like about the Samsung model that the Dropcam Pro doesn't offer is local storage. If you have a SD card, you can store directly on to that, whereas the Dropcam is all remote storage. Well I don't think the Samsung app looks as nice as Dropcam. It offers more hands on options. You can select a lullaby mode and use this as a baby monitor. You can change the brightness, you can do two way audio. So the ups seems to offer more options but the design is a little bit worse in the drop cam pro. Well, we did notice some lag time with both of the cameras. The Samsung tended to have a shorter lag time, on a average. But I did also notice that the video quality wasn't quite as sharp or crisp as I saw on the DropCam Pro. So while you get a shorter lag time, your video quality is a little bit worse. So all in all this is a great camera and its a great competitor for the DropCam pro but they really need to work on the design of the camera the design of the app and their video quality to make it as good as the drop cam pro that is why I still recommend spending the extra ten bucks. And getting the Dropcam Pro instead of the Samsung. Thanks for watching I'm Megan Mullerton for cnet.com
