Tech Culture: The Green Show: iPhones for cash

4:51 /

On the Green Show this week, we talk to YouRenew.com at Apple's iPhone 3GS launch. Also, the latest Apple MacBook Pros' green claims are put to the test, and we show some green tech in preparation for the 2009 Glastonbury Festival.

HEY EVERYONE, IM MARK LICEA AND THIS WEEK WE COVER THE GREEN SIDE OF THE IPHONE 3GS LAUNCH, THE LATEST MACBOOK PRO IS PUT TO THE TEST, AND WE SHOW SOME FUNKY TECH ALL IN THE NAME OF GLASTONBURY, THE GREEN SHOW STARTS NOW. APPLES IPHONE 3GS LAUNCHED LAST WEEK, AND WHILE CROWDS WAITED IN LINE TO UPGRADE TO THE NEWEST VERSION OF THE SMARTPHONE, I SPOKE WITH THE CEO OF A COMPANY CALLED YOURENEW.COM THAT PAID CUSTOMERS CASH FOR THE OLDER GENERATION IPHONE MODELS . AND IN MORE APPLE NEWS, THE COMPANY RECENTLY UPDATED THEIR MACBOOK PRO LINE. OF COURSE APPLE SAYS THEIR LAPTOPS ARE GREEN, BUT WE ASKED OUR SENIOR EDITOR DAN ACKERMAN TO PUT THAT CLAIM TO THE TEST. THE GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS IS THE LARGEST EVENT OF IT'S KIND IN THE WORLD. AND TO KICK IT OFF THE COMPANY ORANGE PARTNERED WITH GOTWIND TO INTRODUCE THE POWER PUMP AT THE FESTIVAL. IT'S A FOOT PUMP CONNECTED TO A TURBINE THAT CAN GENERATE ENOUGH ELECTRICITY TO POWER YOUR PHONE. ACCORDING TO GOTWIND, A MINUTES WORTH OF PUMPING, COULD GENERATE ENOUGH ENERGY FOR 5 MINUTES OF TALK TIME ON YOUR CELL. YOU MAY ALSO GET A LITTLE WORKOUT, JUST MAKE SURE YOU BRING DEODORANT. I DON'T THINK A LOT OF SHOWERING GOES ON AT GLASTONBURY. AND LASTLY IN CELEBRATION OF GLASTONBURY, ORANGE EVISIONED THIS HIGH TECH SOLAR TENT CONCEPT FOR THE FUTURE. IT'S DESIGNED IN ASSOCIATED WITH AMERICAN PRODUCT CONSULTANCY KALEIDOSCOPE AND HAS MOVEABLE SOLAR SHELL PANELS THAT GLIDE TO MAXIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF SUN THEY RECIEVE. IF YOU WERE AT AN EVENT LIKE GLASTONBURY AND FOUND YOURSELF LOST AFTER HOURS, A TEXT MESSAGE FROM A PHONE WOULD TRIGGER YOUR TENT TO GLOW, MAKING IT EASY TO FIND FROM A DISTANCE. THE ENERGY GENERATED AND USED BY THE TENT WOULD ALL BE MONITORED ON A TOUCHSCREEN LCD HUB, THAT WOULD PROVIDE WIRELESS INTERNET, POWER YOUR GADGETS, AND CONTROL HEATING PADS INSIDE THE TENTS GROUNDSHEET. NOW DONT EXPECT THIS AT THE 2009 FESTIVAL. ITS A CONCEPT, ALTHOUGH NOW LOOKING AT THE ACTUAL TENT THAT ORANGE WILL HAVE AT THE FESTIVAL, I CAN'T HELP THINKING...REALLY? NO HEATED FLOORS? AND THAT'S IT FOR THIS WEEK, SEND YOUR FEEDBACK IN GREENSHOW@CNET.COM I'M MARK LICEA, THANKS FOR WATCHING
