CNET Top 5: Tech gifts for Mother's Day

2:46 /

Whether you're a mom, married to a mom, or have a mom, these are the top tech gifts to deliver this May 8.

Mothers Day this year is May 8, everyone. Dont miss it, and dont go with the same old collection of flowers and candy you send every year. I'm Molly Wood, in for Brian Cooley with a CNET Top 5: the top 5 tech gifts for mom. Coming in at Number 5, its the Amazon Kindle. If she doesnt have a Kindle yet, people, now is the time. Heck, the ad-supported model is only 114 bucks. Just make sure you pair it with an Amazon gift card for book buying, and a certificate for several hours of alone time for reading preferably by a pool somewhere. Its a winner. In at number 4, get her a smart phone. Weve got a lot of favorites in this category, from the obvious iPhone 4 to the HTC Thunderbolt to the Shift 4G on Sprint. The main goal, though, is getting mom a gift that will help her take pictures, get on Facebook, text you if you dont have time to talk, get e-mail, and play games on the go. If she doesnt have one yet, this is the year to make it happen. Coming in at Number 3 a Microsoft Xbox Kinect. Every mom I know right now is LOVING the Kinect for one reason: Dance Central. Its an awesomely fun workout, and the kids love it, too. See? If you dont have an Xbox, its a great bundle, and if you do, the Kinect add-on makes it less of a boys toy, and more of a family console. OR, if your mom is anything like me, get her a Kinect AND the new Mortal Kombat game. Im not trying to stereotype, here. Much. At a very strong Number 2 iPad 2. I got my mom an iPad, and weve never been better Facebook friends! Its the perfect e-mail, Web, and video-watching device for mom -- especially if the dude in her life hogs the remote. Plus, hello. Angry Birds Rio. And, I can tell you from personal experience, the iPad is the best kid-entertainment and education tool you will EVER own. Kid, airplane iPad. Its a beautiful thing. And finally, my number one tech gift idea for mom this year? Its my number one tech gift idea ALWAYS a Roku streaming media box. The Roku is the perfect gift: its as cheap as 59 bucks now, no monthly fee, its dead simple to set up, and youll be watching streaming movies, Internet video, and dont forget that every episode of Mad Men is coming to Netflix Instant Streaming. And if theres one constant in the universe, its this: we ladies love to watch Don Draper. Ok, now Im stereotyping. But dont try to pretend its not true. Its true. And thats it for this edition of CNET Top 5. Im Molly Wood, and you can find all the rest of our Top 5 videos over at CNET TV dot com.
