Swap out your iPhone's SIM card
>> One of the knocks on the IPhone is the batteries and the SIM card and everything is all locked up inside here. Well, I got good news and bad news, the bad news is that battery is definitely locked up inside there but you can get the SIM card out and the IPhone will even work without it. I am Tom Merritt and I'll show you that SIM card trick and a few more on today's Insider Secrets.

You may have read that the IPhone has the SIM card soldered in there or something. Well it doesn't. You can actually remove the SIM card quite easily. I'm not sure if it breaks your warranty or not. I don't think it does. But I'll show you how to do that and a few things you can do after you take it out. Get a paperclip and unwind the pointy end here. Find this little depression here at the top of the iPhone. Shove the pointy end in and press until the casing pops out. Inside you'll find and AT and T SIM card. Interestingly, it says 3G on this one, even though the iPhone doesn't support 3G. All right, now what do we do? Well, let's set the card aside for the moment. If you turn on the iPhone, it'll still work. It'll nag you and tell you that there's no SIM card in there, but it works. You can still unlock the phone and use all the features including the web browser, iPod functions, mail, etcetera. Excellent. So now, you have a touch screen iPod Nano that surfs the web. Go ahead and pay that cancellation fee to AT and T if you want. You just can't make calls. But sometimes people forget the iPhone can make calls. You can still do all the other options though. One other trick is what you can do with this SIM card that you pulled out of the iPhone. Now I've got an old Motorola Razr here. I can put the AT and T SIM card in the Razr, turn on the Razr and I've got a perfectly working phone with the same number we had on the iPhone. Now why would you want to do this? I don't know, maybe you're going on a ski trip or headed to a mosh pit or something where you don't want to mess up your nice, beautiful iPhone. So you can take the SIM card out, put it in an old phone you don't mind beating up. When you're done, put it back in the iPhone for your civilized life. Now, unfortunately it doesn't work in reverse. I can't put the Razr SIM card in the iPhone. Well I can but it won't work. I'm sure you can find even more options now that you know where the SIM card is. I want to thank Roman Loyal at Mac Life for the instructions on how to get the SIM card out and the folks at the unofficial Apple blog for the interesting SIM card possibilities. That's it for this edition of Insider Secrets. Enjoy your new iPhone options.
