Sony RDP-XF100iP
-Hey!
I'm Donald Bell, and today, we're taking a first look at the Sony RDP-XF100iP.
This is a portable speaker dock from Sony, compatible with the Apple iPhone and iPod and it runs around $250.
It's a very clean design, very Sony with a matte black finish on the metal grille, the glassy plastic on the top and the dock, and the textured finish on the back.
The dock flips down from the front using a standard design that's compatible with Apple's universal plastic adapters.
And across the top, you have a power button that lights up to indicate when it's on.
None of the other button light up which is a little disappointing but you do get lots of control.
This concave touch sensitive buttons for function, play/pause, skip, menu, radio tuner, enter, EQ presets, and volume.
The same controls are duplicated on the including remote control which is a little more responsive than the actual buttons, but only gets you around 15 to 20 feet.
It's also worth noting that there's a little screen on the front here that displays the mode, system menu, EQ preset, or radio station.
It's nothing fancy but it works.
On the back, you have a retractable antenna along with a handle, an aux input, and a power input.
Now, the back is a little chunky compared to something like the Logitech S715i, but to Sony's credit, the overall sound is much powerful and they've done some creative base port in here through the handle.
Another interesting feature that's easy to miss is on the bottom where Sony offers a way to access and replace the rechargeable battery.
At full charge, the battery gets your around 7 hours of music playback which is pretty good.
Sonically, the sound quality of the system is very good for the price with a surprisingly powerful low end.
If you want the Sony sound but don't care about the radio or having the battery-powered portability of this system, Sony also offers a nearly identical model for $50 less called the RDP-X50iP.
So there you go, that's the Sony RDP-XF100iP.
For cnet.com, I'm Donald Bell.
