First Look: Sony Handycam DCR-SR40

1:40 /

Sony's DCR-SR40 is a solid, midlevel, hard drive-based option, though still-image buffs won't be impressed with this camcorder's submegapixel snapshots.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:01 >> Hello, I'm Phil Ryan senior editor CNET.com. Taking a look at the Sony Handi Cam DCRSR40. The SR40 is a hard drive camcorder, it's got a 30 gigabit hard drive built into it that will hold a little over 7 hours at a quality setting that be is not quite what you'd get from DV camcorders but it's still very good for vacations and things like that. It's got a 20x optical zoom lens inside but it does not have hot shield on top. So unlike some other higher in Sony's you can't add a microphone or an accessory light. Like a lot of Sony camcorders most of the controls happen by this touch screen. Some people might be irked by the fact that it doesn't have a viewfinder in back. So you really have to frame everything on the LCD itself. Other than that, it's a pretty simple camcorder. It's fairly lightweight since it does not have to have all the mechanism for turning tape or moving a DVD around. A little ridge around the top makes it comfortable to hold. Since it is so lightweight, you probably could hold it for a long period of time. It only shoots stills at below 1 mega pixel. So you probably don't want to print them. Though they might be good to send around to your friends. If you're looking to spend a little bit more money, you can step up to the SR80, which adds a hot shield and doubles the hard drive capacity. But if you're looking to save a little cash and stick within the hard drive category, the SR40 could be for you. I'm Phil Ryan and this is the Sony DCRSR40.
