First Look: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9

1:46 /

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9 is a lot of camera with solid shooting performance and photo and movie quality for the money.

Hey, I'm Josh Goldman, senior editor with CNET, and this is a look at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9. So, why would you want the WX9? Well, for starters, it's one of the least expensive cameras available using a backside illuminated CMOS sensor. That gets you better low-light photos and faster shooting performance, and it is quick for an ultracompact, good enough for shooting active kids and pets with some practice. Other positives include a high-res 3-inch LCD on the back, a 5X, f2.6, 25-mm ultrawide angle lens on the front, and full HD movie capture at the press of a button. Photo and movie quality are excellent given its price. If you're a stickler for sharpness, you may be disappointed with how things look at larger screen print sizes, but otherwise, the results are solid. However, getting the best results from this camera require some experimentation with its shooting features. While I like the WX9 a lot, it's definitely not perfect. The controls are a little too small for my hands, and the power button and shutter release can be difficult to press because they're so flat. And this control wheel on the back, it's designed to make changing shooting modes and navigation easier but it's a bit unnecessary and could cause you to accidentally change modes. Also, it requires a proprietary USB cable for charging by computer or wall adapter. If those things sound pretty minor to you, though, it's definitely a pocket camera worth checking out. I'm Josh Goldman and that's the Sony Cyber-shot WX9.
