First Look: Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z5A

Samsung's sleek Series 7 Chronos is a 15-inch Windows laptop that's a close match to the 15-inch MacBook Pro--and it costs less, too.

-Hey, I'm Scott Stein, senior editor at CNET.com, and this a Samsung Series 7 laptop. One several new designs that we've seen in Samsung laptops this years. we've seen the series 9, the series 3, the series 5 chrome book. All of these have numbers attached to them, and the series 7 is angling at that high end post thousand dollar laptop kind of like the 15 inch-inch MacBook Pro, the Dell XPS 15z, also maybe the HP, HP Envy series, and the Sony Vaio SE all in that kind of an inch thick territory, very nice metal chassis. Indeed, this has about the same dimensions as a 15-inch MacBook Pro. In fact, it's a little bit shallower in its footprint as far as depth is concerned. It's got that huge honking multi touch click pad that's just about the same size as a MacBook pro. Unfortunately, it's not quite and accurate or it's fun to use. Meaning that's a little bit jumpy in our usage of the bottom. If you like a big click pad, it's there for you. This 1299 laptop is expensive for windows laptop, but what you'd seen at Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch almost spec for spec. You've got a Quad Core i7 processor. You've got AMD Radeon 6750 graphics in here. So, it's good graphics for gaming, good enough to play your mainstream games, not a screaming graphics processor for your high end stuff, but very good in the middle graphics. You got 750 gigabyte hard drive 8 gigs of RAM. You've also got USB 3.0. No Blu-ray drive, but it is a slot loading DVD drive, which looks kind of cool. Now, the feel of the laptop is nice and metallic. It's not unibody. In fact, you can see the seams on the side here on the edges of the palm rest, but it feels nice and sturdy and it feels comfortable if a little bit dense, but pays off when you think about its battery life. Its 9-cell battery got over 6 hours of battery life in our test and for the graphics basis that's really excellent. You are paying top dollar for this laptop, but if you compare it against other similar laptops in what you're getting in there, it comes about even. If you're a Samsung fan, and you like Samsung designs and you like a really nice crisp keyboard that's backlit, you may wanna check this one out. It's one of the better ones we've seen and did I mention that this 1600 x 900 screen is matte. Yes, it's matte. There aren't that many matte laptop screens left on this planet and this happens to be one of them, which also could be a consideration for you. I'm Scott Stein, and this is a look at the Samsung Series 7 700Z5A S03.
