JVC's HA-RX900 headphones: Great price but not our first choice

[MUSIC] Hey it's Justin from CNet with first look at the JVC HA RX900 over ear headphones. If you're on a budget these will definitely stand out on your shopping list. You can get it right now for about 63 bucks on Amazon. But there are a few things you should know before ordering. First of all, these headphones are huge. The extra padding on the ear cups and the headband are good points for comfort while you're listening, but they do weigh about a third more than normal full size headphones in this price class. The other thing that really anchors these to the home is the 11 and a half foot cord that exits out of the left ear cup. Note that at this price range, we really don't expect to have a detachable wire. But, it really woulda been nice. The ear cups fit warmly around your ears due to the synthetic leather, which tends to heat up after long listening sessions. That happens a lot with cheaper headphones. So, you'll definitely want to take a break after listening to them for a while. Another complaint is that you can't replace the ear pads once they wear out. The cups and the plug are usually the first places to fail on a pair of headphones, and neither of them are replaceable on these guys, so compare back to the Audio-Technica ATH-M30s that can do both, and you'll actually see why we prefer these cans over the JVCs. JVC boasts about its 50 millimeter driver units and ring port structures in each ear cup. And most people upgrading from the stock ear buds that come with a lot of mobile devices these days will love the way they sound. And their performance was universally good as I ran them through a couple sources that includes a record player, a headphone amp, a computer, a mixer, and a home theater receiver. The only people that should keep shopping though are fans of music that have an emphasis on the lower frequencies. These headphones aren't gonna blow you away with their bass response. So if you're really into bass, I'd actually recommend the Sony MDR-V6, any of the V-Moda headphones or the Aiaiai TMA-1s. The JVC HA-RX900's best feature is a combination of a budget price tag. And an ample sound stage that suits a few types of music for stationary listening. So it definitely gets the job done if you're shopping for a headphone right now to use exclusively at work or at home and you can't spend more than 70 bucks.
