Hewlett-Packard's Mscape suite of software applications helps users create location-based games and tours. HP brings its technology, currently in beta, to life with an urban adventure using handheld devices and actors. Here, CNET News.com's Erica Ogg chronicles her journey in San Francisco.

^M00:00:01 [ Music ] ^M00:00:03 >> One of the many technologies that Hewlett Packard has cooking up in its labs is something called Mscapes. It's a set of software applications that allows anyone to create a location based game or tour. To get an idea of how this works, HP invited me and a couple of reporters out for an urban scavenger hunt based on the Mscape software. >< So you're gonna get two devices essentially. One is sort of like your compass that tells you where to go, what to do and how to complete the mission to solve them; and then at periodic times throughout the game you'll be prompted to use the iPad device in order to enter in some codes or to receive information about a clue. >> 3-2-1 go. >> So we're on this mission, we've been tasked with identifying a shadowy company that has created these hand-held devices that are gonna have to have rewired human brains. Right now we're on our way to find out about a woman who works for a drug company of some sorts. ^M00:00:59 [ Music ] ^M00:01:20 >> We're given a picture of a woman and the clue says look high and low and so far we haven't put it together yet. [Speaker: inaudible.] >> Can we guess? >> Okay we can guess. We might lose points if we guess. >> Or we might win points. >> No if the family feud buzzer sounds, we lost. >> You lost 1/3 of your score for this mission. You need to try again. >> [ Speaker: inaudible] >> We're just gonna put yes. >> [Speaker: inaudible.] >> Exacto mondo. >> All right. >> Okay there was a little bit of cheating but we got the right answer. >> Okay team--major development. There's a robot in your immediate vicinity. This robot is located on one of the corners, O'Farrell and Powell; he's employing the oldest trick in the book. He's trying to blend in as one of those silver robot-like street performers you see all over the city. Surround the robot and execute your team's best synchronized robot dance. ^M00:02:22 [ Music ] ^M00:02:36 >> And we win the fortune cookie which is 4342. >> 4342 and then there's gonna be a video message. So we have to come up with a wacky gadget of the future, something like the iPod of 2044 so we're putting out thinking caps on now. >> Should we shoot our video while we're sketching it? >> It's gonna be a TV on the inside, it's gonna have music and he's gonna ingest it and it's gonna go straight to his brain. >> That's his brain. >> I've just received word that a truly evil robot. [ Speaker: inaudible.] >> The robot strategy is to lure town's members to the media i.e. you, back to the hotel room and steal all their secrets. You brave souls must approach her, she's at the bar and talk to her; you'll be able to identify her by the power cord present somewhere on her body and her somewhat risque [assumed spelling] fashion trait. Here's how you can dispatch the robot. It can overheat and you should approach her and deliver a [inaudible] pickup wine, she will overheat and shut down. ^M00:03:44 [ Music ] ^M00:04:08 >> All right. You gotta remember that. 29 Frogs catch 29 flies in 29 minutes. How many frogs are required to catch 87 flies in 87 minutes? The answer is not 87. Spit it out and try again. >> I keep losing the problem. >> If you see that girl is so into the numbers she gave you now, start heading to Foley's [inaudible]. >> You've solved the game. So we've finished the game and our prize is beer. >> Really? >> Yeah.
