I want a Google Wallet

Culture
What's up, Brian Tong here and welcome to the Apple Byte for everything you want to know in the world of Apple. Let's get to the show. Now, a couple of weeks ago, we talked about Google making some big moves and they're it again with their recently announced Google wallet service. It's initially rolling out in New York and San Francisco this summer and you'll need a Nexus S phone on Sprint to take advantage of it, but it will be using a Near-Field-Communication Chip in you phone to make purchases wit a single tab. Retailers like Macy's, Peet's Coffee & Tea, Walgreens, and the Container Store are on board. Come on, who doesn't love plastic organizing buckets, but the Big A has been rumored to not be included in NFC and Apple's next iPhone, if that's the case, they will be significantly behind in the game. Now, it's been a rough week for Apple. You might have once thought the Mac was invisible, the viruses are malware, but it was only a matter of time, and now significant amount of Mac are suffering from and ETD. Apple's first mum about it when thousand of users accidentally installed Mac defender, which pretends to be an anti virus program, but it's actually built to steal personal information just like your credit card number. Now, Apple technicians were reportedly told not help customers remove or shut down the malware and that's a huge bad Apple, but the Big A just announced a Mac OS X software update will be available shortly to find and remove Mac defender and similar programs because no wants to tell their significant other about that rush. They just won't go away on their computer. Now WWDC is just a couple of weeks away and new rumors from Russian site mobile review says that iOS 5 will not support the iPhone 3GS. The writer says it was an educated guess, but would you even be surprised. We've seen how quickly Apple foresees upgrade to keep up because come on. If you're still using the 3GS, you are really not that cool anymore, and anyone with an iPhone 4 is a way cooler than you. Let's face it. Alright, let's take a quick break with a how's you tip. You might find yourself in a situation where an embarrassing or compromising text message shows up when you don't want it to. We're gonna show how to hide your text messages on an iPhone or Android phone if you wanna keep those messages private. On an iPhone, go to your settings, then messages, you'll see an option for show preview. Turn that off, and from then on, you won't see previews of your text messages. It will still show the name of the persons who sent it, so if you're wanna be as secretive as James Bond, you can change that person's name and no one will know who it came from. Now, on an android phone, when you receive a message, it shows up in your notification status bar, but if you don't like that, open up the messaging up, go to your settings and under the notification settings, remove the check mark to display the messages. You won't be notified when you get a message, but no one else will either. A lot of android users also have apps that display a pop up window whenever the receive a text message so you can go in to the settings of an app like SMS pop up or handset and turn it off when you don't want your messages to be seen. Sure, they sound a little shady and some people might use this if they up to no good, but this also helps keep the messages you want private to stay private. I'm Brian Tong with CNET.com with your text message without you use a wag. Yeah, that guy is really helpful. Now, Apple filed a suit against Samsung last month claiming Samsung had deliberately copied Apple's technology user interface and innovative style. I see nothing similar between the iPhone 3GS and the Samsung Galaxy S. The design and OS, they look totally different from each other, and look, one says Samsung and the other one doesn't. Now, Apple's legal has not been granted access to some of Samsung's unreleased product like the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab to build their case after judge ruled Samsung has promoted them enough where the aren't secret anymore. You know, it's good to be the key. Now, if you're happy about your MacBook, your MacBook Pro or your MacBook Air, you probably should be. According to consumer reports laptop rankings, Apple took the top spot in the small laptop section for their 11-inch MacBook Air. In the 13-inch model category, Apple took the top 5 of seven spots with Sony and Asus taking the final 2. Then, MacBook Pro took the top 3 spots in the 15-inch category, and the [unk] took the top 2 spots in the 17-inch category. Unfortunately, Apple did not win the 14-inch category, but guess what, the Apple Byte did and because Apple doesn't make a fortune of this laptop. Amazon just launched their own Mac download store that directly competes with Apple's built in Mac app store in OS X. Amazon store has 250 software titles and games available including the [unk] titles, but the biggest one that Apple doesn't have, Microsoft Office. Oh, smacks. Also, a lot of you have been asking about when Apple launched its back to school deals where in the past you could buy a computer and get an iPod touch for free. Well, it happened during the last week of May for the first week of June in the past year or so. It should be coming any time soon, so just wait a little bit if you're read to buy. Alright now, guess what we have, a free give away from our friend at Power Support for the HD anti glare films for the iPad 2 that's a personal favorite of mine, so count them, one, two, three, four, five. All you have to do is send us an e-mail with the colors of the Angry Birds hanging from my office ceiling in last week's episode and we'll pick our winners next week plus as a special bonus, Power Support is hooking you guys all up with an online code to purchase some of their goodies. The code is CNET15 and you can go to their website right here, right down below here and tell them that the Apple Byte sent you. Alright, that's gonna do for this week's show. Send us your contest submissions and questions to the Apple Byte at CNET.com and we'll see you next week for another bye of Apple
