Ep. 20: 5 Reasons Android is better than iPhone

Mobile
They look at endurance three point oh a dual core phone in the top five reasons Andrew is better than -- -- and all that. And more coming up in this week's edition of -- that was weekly for Thursday October 14 2010. I'm just -- -- alongside. Guest -- senior associate editor Antuan Goodwin. And of course our producer been you know welcome. Thanks for being here at extra editing. So let's get right into it -- -- three point oh. Gingerbread. Eight Helms got my head desserts mixed up there for a second -- it not naming scheme. It you know we've had those kind of themes here -- -- as well we had a bunch of nautical themed projects for awhile. But -- desert -- I imagine there. Parties there are -- parties are pretty -- -- -- the ill yet the titular -- exactly. -- so gingerbread. Some news came that or some rumors also -- and what's gonna be involved what's going to be. Major features in that release. Was rumored to be 103 point only have to -- we don't know exactly what the version numbers going to be. But that's everyone's best -- -- it looks like the gingerbread software development kit is going to potentially be released next week. Around. And that may be one of the top features in gingerbread would be video chat as -- built -- to -- talk. That there have that built -- to the desktop platform. And indie -- Rubin kind of hinted that. This might come in to the actual -- on on entered devices as well -- be a pretty cool feature in my opinion. Yet that seems like the next logical step there. You know they've they've kind of they've taken -- -- how they -- That kind of Google Voice. Chat that's built into the that Google Talk into a more full featured part of the Google Voice clients the same period there -- this. To get something that they've already get kind of going on the desktop and -- a more useful. By putting in in the -- that. Right yeah and -- and I think were we have started seeing what he needs Timor devices with front facing cameras. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Mean -- packages -- are you know one camera devices. With they have mirror system. Years and prisons the point that and and smoke the hours -- -- I've spoken to have the governor. But yeah there's a lot of it harder coming out with -- the first perfect -- -- No yes these to come out your current camera phones first came out may have -- on the MC detailed portrait here so yeah tactic amid -- tenements and work there really useful. Yes -- -- -- beat the does that might -- speakers you've been doing the time this Friendster pictures yet work it. Com. Anyway so what else is gonna be in gingerbread it's going to be tablet ready which is use something we've been hearing a lot of bad -- Including LG's -- The saying they're not gonna release it however -- they're gonna probably wait till gingerbread comes out as. -- The current version Ferrari it was not really geared towards tablet and Google is really mean that clear -- -- -- -- will be. -- and I think they're really gonna try to make a lot of U -- improvements. And try to remove the need for third party skins. So that -- TC sense and moto blur and stuff like that. Who'll wants to make -- go away and you know they're gonna try to accomplish that with the better -- line so we'll see unlikely ever happen. -- yeah -- think the manufacturers. And particularly the carriers they're having way too much fun right now. With the customization -- and the -- to really. That kind of the only way that. They can differentiate. Their individual and -- from. -- any other injury and that -- kind of floating around on the marketed by being able to stay in we've got this cool little feature oh you know we're the only one that can offer like. In Tobler. Or whatever it Biller yes mean. I don't think they'll ever stop doing that. But I mean -- really moving in the sport -- -- It's just -- the right direction but yet at I don't think it is much about me to -- -- Brothers in the second actually. It's more for business reasons -- com but it walled off their second. And then so the last area is gaining performance you know I've then -- -- have really. And iPad even have some really become full features gaming devices and -- it has some games equals of course has -- birds. But it is not it's sort of violence has serious gaming device yet. Partly because of power potentially or just me because -- OS hasn't. Up to a quite yet but it looks like they're gonna try to fix that with. The three point -- here. Then you -- to -- with their phone. If -- something worth looking into. And that you know. Game does really well I think it's a lot of people into. You know the iPhone and yet I touch -- and get hooked on the yet but that's playing their little game playing the games and whatnot and then you know -- The -- in the next logical step you and you know -- at the locally complained about there being a lack of good games on the Android platform. Before yeah. And that's really what drives the app store for Apple is the games look at what the hottest -- apps are. There's majority of them it seemed like there -- games most that the. Yet it limits all that you know the people and who have iphones were casual users -- talk about other the game they can play -- it. To do this exactly you can plan your iPod and map but its catalogue and -- And that's not caring. -- So it looks like it this may -- may find out the answers to these in small our next week sophisticated. And actually in November sometime if -- sort of -- to their release cycle of every six months or so -- But these are all rumors and mules the following up on sort of news from Google there was a interview. With. Andy Rubin who is this the VP eight school in terms of -- hundred. With PC mag is this yet. And he covered a bunch of different topics then we're gonna it on a couple of them. So it asks him about sort of one of -- issues that we constantly talk. On this show and sort of all over there -- community plea in -- it which is it is. Discrepancy and version numbers in. You know the fragmentation and in. He knows they're going to be some kind of fixed -- -- And he based -- says you know I think that it's it's an ammunition now but it's not really mean you should in the feature and says I think that -- ample justice strategies in their time to market for these new releases accordingly. I think -- he sort of basically saying. That. Consumers events they're gonna not by devices that come with older versions of Mandarin like would you go out there and by computer that are shipping with windows 95. The consumers will demand on the latest versions -- buying. Hardware -- comes with -- versed -- The operating system and so that loses he feels problem that Google does not need to direct install in the marketplace is -- gonna -- so there. Yeah economy and it. On the one hand you know the the steady buyers arrogant and now. They're gonna know they're buying a device that are you a little bit crippled and they're gonna know that. They're gonna that there at the mercy of the manufacturer to -- update later on down the line that kind of discouraging and -- on the other hand. You know you've got the users who are a little bit more casual -- You know may not be it. And into the different version numbers but at some point after they've by the phone they're gonna find out that arrow like math -- than do the things that you know this person's phone doesn't. The first thing they're gonna do you know go Oracle planet and about how much -- injury -- -- For me to just make make the platform and the whole look bad. Indefinitely if -- -- Getting with the program and and sticking with the newest version number in making sure that -- -- on the same page worked out for everybody in the end -- But clearly a risky strategy that they're taking. -- -- no enforcement no persuasion just the market for itself. You eliminate there -- I Google cover room but. Kind of thing where they can you know -- in the a lot of these issues queries you have phones that are still coming out with version one point fixed who can disable. I really our fault you know we just offer the best in the union -- -- guys and it you know economy who -- Look a little bit better in the are -- for protects Google from looking bad -- in the -- who's here. They're very Adam Smith economics here. Harlem the invisible hand. So he goes on the interview goes on inmates have asked again really about openness sensitive. How come you guys don't have minimum standards for -- devises. No why would you accept the device. That. Would not have Android marketplace on an opinion to draw the line there and again he says hey. Where open and -- means that I've given up control. What can and can't be put on phones. And put that in the hands of standard. And -- -- a minimum revolution and indeed but -- to be here and you need a piano and that is the confusing part because when we have Donald bell on hearing is talking about tablets and how com. The Dell streak for example have these weird features of being a phone when it really was a tablet he was he said to get. Sort of certified to -- marketplace. They needed to have those features. So this -- does seem to conflict with. You know what actually the program hasn't been in the past. So. Or clears up well maybe even. You know what what what it is it actually a standard -- -- -- just stay. Not -- without a standard to get access to. The the injury -- ask them to install the Internet the only a standard you want to use the programs and services that we -- army. Right -- -- that -- -- yet he -- of -- he's saying you know. If someone doesn't want to have an Android marketplace which we've definitely seen on tablets on -- on on devices. That that's okay it's probably direct standards are around if you do want the Google services by marketplace then you have these features. Com. So. You know again it's open and and he's saying we can't really control it. What else hear more talk about idiots at -- he had I mean again I think this probably has the same source for the other stories that video chat probably is gonna be. And up recurrent feature in you know. I think everyone is definitely pretty excited about the capabilities of video chat. Atlantis he had built in I'd love to see Skype supporting it for example it was nice -- in out that event it and -- -- attack that. Effect on the desktop. Skype has the most widely used in video chat. Happen to nearly one of the most widely known the yet it -- one of the most widely known targets that would and and and go with it yet is probably went off of the most widely used. So it today and what's missing for the most part on. As -- like on the iPhone with face time is sort of desktop phone video chat. Com and if they released this sort of as a Google Talk. Extension. You know then. Theoretically you and your desktop to phone. With existing Google Talk that up there. Stereos video chat there is I'm -- and he says. They ask them you know what's gonna be in gingerbread -- he he's very day about it but he says. More social media. More forms of communication. The sort of I'd put says he's -- every emphasizes that unions going to be important for ginger bread which we can -- on the previous story. And then he he does is kind of I don't know -- make it isn't on or blending of the web and native is probably interest in native apps that assume. And even a like infant mental you know it I don't know it that it may -- he's talking about. And you know win in native is that more apps that sort of -- it's Tim mollify -- Stuff built into them Iraq rather than writing and job people -- stuff and meets him off five -- -- pull in web content would. So they can you re use your web content in your Android -- and it. You know will -- purpose I don't know. Or maybe just you know the the the OS being able to. Pull in information from the the web without may be needing an app running or something like that perhaps. Kind of like how we see the the Twitter integration with the official Twitter client how that information shows up in other places. For example -- your contact you can. You know once you have a Twitter -- contact in an actual contact in your address book. That information goes in -- both places maybe -- net for more services more web services. Outside of just an application would do that. Interest in it is really cross integration. There. -- -- really do like the twittered his book integration in. Android. So flash of course. Citizens said they you know what in Munich of -- -- -- -- it and it is in the marketplace overall. -- man why is it why is it important to have watched on the handwritten. This is says that he wants flash because he wants entered users to have access to the full web. Is the number one most -- that. You know we have a great web browsing here and suddenly -- not. Perfect yet -- and -- -- at least you and go to -- her website that has the menu down last you can read. As opposed to some of -- Yeah I mean. Of course like the the old web designer and mean it when that -- -- restaurant diners not doing your menus and flash. But you know at the same time. The flexibility to be able to to have access to those sort of things and then you know for other things for which -- is more appropriate. Like in streaming video all of -- -- -- -- -- or something like that it really good to have -- Where CNET TV yeah definitely CNET than that before it actually when -- the lesbian came out I would. A threat to stream -- putt at that -- on from in the -- with what he worked out very well with -- move because the bandwidth. That I had my phone but it economical to be able and neck of the those sorts of -- -- without requiring people that. It jump around and and -- in an offer. Phone specific programs. Exactly I mean people will optimize and thrown him and we certainly there are bad. Being able to sort of from day -- on -- date ten or whatever it is now with Andrew. To access the -- -- Even if people happen -- -- is pretty powerful -- Yeah that that -- one of the promises of Smartphones if like -- you're not getting. You know a stripped down you know you you you can access the web on a flip and years ago but it was -- trip down -- believe. Text version of the away and over -- appeal of Smartphones of that -- here we're past that now. Exactly. Finally -- ask him about windows phone seven. Anything he says the world doesn't need another platform. -- its free and open. What else you need. I think that the only reason you created a platform is political reasons. You know why doesn't the whole world from on and write them. The basically. You know he thinks Microsoft's been displeased. Windows phone seven based on -- -- -- yeah yeah. Yeah and and and and shocked as well that didn't happen. Well mean that there what did you expect him to -- -- -- -- -- Pretty -- -- promoting Android. -- -- -- -- but I mean at the same time. I don't really agree that statement out but they competition. Is is you know breeds that they're gonna -- desire to create better -- -- product. And to be fair he does say that competition is spirit and they push -- the push the industry. It does he did he -- they probably have enough competition. Yeah and permeate just you just let me know that you know there'll never be like in native -- but -- -- remind current. Microsoft has their platform -- a statement. Yep that is probably true. Asked -- clients. One client that came out this week is the and -- spirit -- -- client but Adobe air for Android. A run time I guess they would call it. So Adobe air hit the market -- Moon over 738. And basically we had you know the guys from Adobe here talking about this and in one -- -- very early -- that's. And Adobe air lets you run apps that were built in the Adobe. Air. -- so essentially -- it's pretty similar to classic if an app written flash can pretty easily get it running on here. Com. And air apps will be deployed in the marketplace and of this standalone applications. The require the you have that error. Could have run time. Component but if you don't. It's a fairly seamless process to get it installed. -- of -- application you download will prompt you to install it. And eventually Adobe says it's gonna come preinstalled on their devices in -- -- how many year. -- -- -- -- that they conflict -- may be another one of the things up to the discretion of the manufacturer. But it same time it seems like something that -- don't see why manufacturer wouldn't do that for a new phone. Right. But if if if if relieve the kind of the first time where their software -- -- -- -- -- -- phone. I mean you get used to it and downloading an app when your computer and saying hey you -- that net framework -- a -- let's plug -- but I think. This may be one of the first time that we've seen. A phone -- -- like a need additional software to run this software. I remember actually with my Treo many many many years ago I want to run opera and I had to download -- utter -- -- forgot about data from. Yet -- with Java run time just like this -- it if it's pretty similar experience although the job experience with awful. Specially on the Treo if -- was awful on the things that are in. Remember also running opera on Windiz. When is it. -- -- -- With that old when does -- Windows Mobile ethnic something of the area and and you're in opera and then there was that -- -- And I. The president. Anyway you can download hair has -- standalone remarked place now or wait until you download an application that requires -- and it -- or should get it. There's not a directory sort of within the -- -- Of the air run time of other air apps. So if you -- curious to Google for them or wait till later in the show we'll tell you how to gamble. What else speaking about. Opera opera and yeah exactly or just -- that's. -- -- -- This morning or last night and and really know -- time zones or are aware. You know definitely isn't exactly I mean it can have been last week the took our way Pitts yeah I mean map for that. -- rapper announced me. -- Sudanese step for them. On mobile devices the release of opera mobile for Android phones and -- -- To clarify 'cause little confusing that had -- opera Mimi for -- out for awhile. I'm app from mobile is release -- a full browser -- opera mini. Had to go through opera's servers and sort of get -- -- the it now press kind of undermines version right. Quote unquote optimize diverged and -- -- passive this is a full browser I think that is sort of exciting part about this is that it. We'll have hardware acceleration. And extensions. And we ever seen extensions in a mobile browser. Com. Yet we have. The browser. But in my mind as an Android to warm there is an injury to present all senator -- dolphin a student extension removing. That I've never got wonder work rate but there and I'm sure that on the better -- in mind. They probably work a little bit better yet health and when companies he came out extensions one of its major bullet points. Well that's pretty cool I mean I think extensions. Are really. Very few people. Well very few power users -- -- Don't have it several extensions installed on their desktop browsers. And -- hundred users you know typically our parry users that this is going to be pretty. Killer feature. -- -- -- -- -- -- Yet that look like the use in the hardware acceleration or. Scrolling intending to make -- -- -- faster and smoother. Which of course begs the question of how or other browsers and windows thing. -- -- -- -- -- -- really find that those operations are that slow today. They're gonna be wicked -- now via. Yeah me news flash hardware accelerated down -- and right. A known the theme. Last -- and hardware accelerated with the hardware accelerated on the up until just recently and that being granted it may be part of the last ten. Yet -- direct I don't know if it's all flash animation or just video playback you but it certainly there is so Margaret sellers -- -- anyway. Opera. Mobile printer its -- -- Critiques that in so I think this isn't -- currently that. Will be out. Soon with Hughes says to direct -- marketplace within thirty days. Perhaps sometime -- -- Perhaps on Halloween. Who knows. So staying on the hardware theme here hardware acceleration now -- talking about. Tablet are -- There's a report out from analyst gene Munster -- senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray. About I Pattinson Android. Tablets and -- not tablets. He sort of says in summary is that the -- it's gonna win that have Hillary's in the longer term. It's gonna play out like -- -- played where for the first years. Apple's gonna have the advantage. Just -- they have you know the first mover advantage here. But as more and more tablets come out -- has the speech to get optimize on Mandarin. Hopefully with gingerbread. That they're gonna pose stiff competition and that they're gonna either it'll probably a 5050 split in the market but immigrants who is gonna beat Apple. -- -- And I think part of that is this that it. Going to be easier for more developers. More of manufacturers and knowing and the kind of come out there aren't -- you know you're gonna have. The competition between. You know Dell and Samsung and and then eventually LG. -- those -- a lot more models for customers to choose from in a variety of sizes with a variety of features and leave -- for people to get just what they want. Without having mechanical -- -- -- all kind of a situation with via -- Yeah I mean when it's TD devices to one -- two it's pretty hurt beaten that's what we're seeing more and more with you know I've found -- -- around them. This will. No doubt please -- -- that and we agree. And then sort of in conclusion here he says Microsoft is his new feature in tablet for -- None none now -- The harsh statement and make it well he says and partly from -- up they've got a lot of work if they want to stay revel relevant. In the current from a stance -- Youth finally Microsoft with missing tablet really hardcore five years ago might. It was gonna be the wave of the future and now nothing. Yeah well and that's what happened with mobile phones for a long time Microsoft does that put -- really -- and their like oh man were way behind. Let's regroup figure our strategy and -- kind of let our -- it's chaired who until for a couple years and -- -- -- windows phone seven. The -- -- yeah windows tablet that in communities really isn't Windows 7 tablet. In his -- though arranged move -- we -- naming scheme. -- -- If those satellite present more like for the phone or maybe just like a stripped numbers and of the desktop and -- -- Yep who knows that that's the outlook for another show oh. Windiz that -- exactly. Now the do it. Moving on here in -- Some news from Verizon and Amazon about. Presence gonna start the -- -- the Kindle -- On a bunch of different Android phones. According to the company is that it will be preloaded on. Phones that says these fascinate the -- two and -- it acts. It was we think about that printing -- -- -- Yeah I mean especially for you know specific things like -- -- basically. -- pre loading a store. On to your phone third replete pre loading a way for you to buy things on your and it's not like the music player something that's universally. People are gonna use. They're gonna be users who wanna use who wanted to -- ends up for example the -- -- and then they're gonna have to. The -- -- -- to share real estate on their phone. With the Kindle. And there's going to be no we for the negative off of -- popular at work you can't uninstall and easily without a router something like that. You'd be the tweak here and enthusiasts than me -- really think this is -- horrible idea. -- -- -- -- -- generally agree I'm all for choice you know and then -- one install on your app your phone when -- there was -- installed there. You know -- and make an extra buck here. It's -- withheld this. World crap where -- I hate to call it backward of the Kindle to really get it -- it's actually on my phone but because I use it but I'm thinking about who wouldn't. But did -- all at -- from in a mythic couple bucks -- every. And respond we -- with your app on it with your store on it or whatever exactly I mean I think a better compromise maybe it's just promote. He in the marketplace. For specific carrier Amazon really heavily. -- you know they could just have a big promotion. Area that the carrier -- control. And they promoted but they're not crowding your your phone with apps in the -- current -- has that. There on on. No on the on the regular Android and at -- on the -- the phones that can be cat has in the app store with things that they're promoting anyway. Usually right but that the -- enemies type it in and -- a couple of other exclusives yeah no that is. Kindle spirit ultimately yeah exactly totally agree. I'm well coming up after the break we're gonna get into some more hardware. That terminator phone in the top five reasons -- -- it is better than iPhone all of that more coming up. -- -- -- All ranked. We're back here and we are talking about the Detroit to global. We talked about this last week actually there's some news from T today about it. Him this week there is accidentally. AA argues it's happened so and the last week. He -- specs on the -- to. Global world edition. Specs are it is a hundred to two powered device. With a one point two gigahertz keep you. Dual mode support for both residents three G network it. And overseas w.s TDMA HS DP ages UPA networks. Com. Other details it's gonna have five megapixel camera. Out of folk is -- -- class mobile hot spot forty gigs of internal storage. -- -- -- -- so it it's exciting that there is sort of integrated world thrown out that are. Now released -- and soon. It's you know other -- -- the world phones nothing super exciting. But reasonably fast and. I'm pretty excited about then I mean the the one point two gigahertz with it after in the regulatory and the regulatory too if they won one yet. The little bootable ball there. I -- probably do little bump and oppressed to probably part and and make sense he may be the bump is just there penitent helped justify the the fact that the world -- -- inevitably going to be more expensive. -- -- as there is. Basically a second cellular antenna and -- so you know little. It's not only does -- -- defect in the -- antenna it's also more powerful. Or the power users rather than a market that. And it's also more expensive to use. -- isn't that at a community a dollar a minute richter calls them -- idea and really have much experience with that understanding get really. Really pricey as well most people -- know travel overseas does pick up -- -- when they get there. -- exactly. So I think there's no price -- on this yet. But we do have -- -- -- or -- -- -- rumors as the galaxy -- Talked about this couple weeks. Weeks ago. I've talked about. Playing with it he TNT TI -- last week -- hand on -- -- as well. I think it's kinda cool but it's it's too small you know -- type and a lot. And it's great for reading and web browsing and and is significantly bigger than my phone. This -- found to be a bigger minutes is not. -- -- -- Eager to buy that would -- -- -- -- field but. Can elect the size of it I think -- -- good. -- side my back and -- -- pulling this out on a train. Where is you know the -- and it's also a good side of that something about it -- seems like I wouldn't carry -- around. And I mean this blackened hole when he and comfortably at it has public substantial -- to -- their fellow world -- go and break it but the same time. I think the screens kind of big enough for doing some reading in an -- like the Kindle app or something like that without. Getting to the point -- -- him -- here on a netbook and a keyboard. -- here's the real question would you pay 39948. United and -- You can. I wasn't the question. 299 for -- 1899 would you want it to nine the united with the service contract. That's a good question enough -- the tablet for the device like this. And while wouldn't necessarily need -- service and -- -- but I know I wonder if he had do you want. To have to get a service contract and it seems like the approach they're taking here is that. If pool for the most part be sold by carriers will be a -- one it's rumored 439 and -- released on November 14. With a service plan -- five -- 999. Without a contract. Timo -- is supposed to be 399 and with two year service contract and normally in rebate. Com or 649. Without. It and what supposed to be the first full launch is the Verizon Warren. Ports they don't have any -- here but. Probably as it rams team -- united price -- there yeah that price tag. With a contract is that -- the that'd -- it is it's not. I mean -- it's not. Compared that I had just don't know how that can compete for -- -- It is they're they're gonna have to find something to way to come down that -- Not predict they're gonna have some trouble filling these and you'll see the price drop pretty quickly. -- -- expect trying to get rid of them. Rip it with his team that guy at three G for sixth winning. With no contract or the fourth -- on her for nine. And the bigger screen courts and the meaning that we -- -- we just had a that this is about treatment but I mean aren't that people are gonna look and they -- paying more relax. -- -- -- -- -- And then back and -- -- Apple logo -- -- to to dabble in mint just clear all Apple logos were at 200 -- is in itself at India. -- -- -- So here's the you took a look at the pioneer heads up display that and this is will see -- hundredth time here in a second -- -- sort of a quick overview here. And India. Essentially what pioneers working nine is it's they -- laser heads up display that they're using for for cars. And I mean we've seen heads up display since the eighty's but I mean usually there kind of monochromatic in their small in their heart to see. -- system is gonna use an array of lasers I think. Two. Predict a full color screen. Full color display on to your transparent windshield while you drive and the injury tie in here is that it actually. Using. And pulling data from -- -- -- phone. For connection to the Internet for things like traffic data on that -- maybe even a map data itself. You know we you can policy things like who commands hurts the evidently Google Maps -- -- Google. Street you live or something like that maybe mean they leave the arrows on to the -- of the app that -- pretty awesome. Cool well. When can we look for this will there's staying -- that it's coming. And and Sunnis and we can look for it you'll probably will probably -- at first -- Sort of -- really expensive aftermarket add on -- you can just Anna buy and maybe they're richer. You know have installed in your -- separately but there -- in talks with a couple automotive billions of -- will start seeing. This technologies you know in and the BMW of the future Mars or to feature whoever pioneers working with right now bird. Interest aim well at level -- my car. Pretty and if left the lake. We've been promised futuristic cars and the mean they have been getting better -- -- you know we're not gonna get flying cars at least personally there's in the windshield right. Well maybe it's gonna be built into the Google's so threatened her and -- -- that of people there. Calm cool so finally this week -- in handwritten news there's been a lot of stories about the terminator phone. -- we are sort of look -- around that here from our friends Everett and moderate and me. As the terminator phones kind of refers to whatever the first phone with the head to court he ripped to processor -- I believe it is sort of but the -- And Motorola's that's co CEO soon to be this CEO. Motorola mobile. When they use the break because of our. Sanjay job -- says confirm that it is real soaps launch and early 2011 and sounds like it probably is gonna come out and these are mostly rumors here. To multiple carriers. Eighteenth you probably the first to launch this. On the code name with the -- and he is the Olympus. But there's also a version for Verizon. Sounds like it's gonna be a -- only models that has a screens between three point seven and four point three inches. Will of course the dual core -- figure its tegra two processor. Hand a front facing camera. So let's see V released the I'm where the announcement is expected to be at -- yes. On January 5 between eleven I think -- and scheduled to give the keynote on that date and of course we will cover that for you. We start calling that judgment day. Awesome BS -- -- go a little terminator theme yes they'll definitely be judgment Tuesday for -- But I don't sounds pretty exciting -- with an impressive specs. There's if I think units annually if they elect a new atom dual core phones -- gonna. In a pretty -- blew everything else water. Do it he will I think then Motorola. Palm one they break up is relive looking forces have. Their first speak success as a separate -- Billy the only company. In the I think they're sort of stake in a lot of there. That. On this phone. But it will certainly be very -- team. And at all BHD because -- -- be early January and no doubt there's going to be some Apple announcement at around them as well. Usually. Don't -- so whose announcement Wolverine supreme. I don't know either. Alright we come to the time you've all been waiting for the top five reasons Android -- better than iPhone. These are unscientific. And of course our own opinion so if you disagree with that please feel -- resident and -- out that's not com. The I don't know -- would because we are always right. So in no particular order of the royal number them for convenience number one. Android as a real multitasking. But this on the real the real yes we know I've -- as multitasking bet. It's it's -- kind of weird. It doesn't it's not apps can't really do whatever they want to the background. Which -- argue the good thing that and read we really like. You know we like apps and developers to be able to do with the want to do. And and and when and when it's done properly it is extremely clear it's really powerful. Yeah does the amount of things that you can do with real multi that -- -- then improperly the now and in some issues Vladimir right now or a -- on the good parts. Yes you have to remember that with great power comes great responsibility. Indeed -- aren't put it -- what's number two that you and is we've got -- yes and you can dent on the the and the -- -- tomorrow -- never had a into your lord and after Steve Jobs. Exactly or terminator and reverted I don't developed earlier in the show why classes. A good thing on the phone yes -- is pretty much make the Internet. Act like the Internet that we all know rate. And that's a good thing and that's what you know our phones are just little computers at this point -- I think that really goes to demonstrate that can we roll we've got into the -- and -- alpha. We can I think that's from kind of sort of house that now they're beginning -- having I think there are allowed to do -- I don't know what we've seen there. -- I'm not wanting more I don't know -- them. -- Com. So Moore number three more hardware choices and think we have something like eighty different -- phones to choose from. You know whatever the feature set the you're looking for there's probably some phone that answers that features that. You know like -- TC elect Samsung. Or Motorola. You can choose them. And you can and by picking and choosing your features you can make you get a phone that and meets your needs and and and really minute there's something to be said about that. Public exceeding your -- exact you don't need to. 500 dollar -- you don't have to Iowa and you can still get most of the benefit their pick the benefits that are important to you -- care about having a front facing camera. You get a all of them have one if you really need one are you like -- and you get -- to. Yeah -- we saw you know last week a lot of really low -- Android phones come out or you know some people at her yeah. Aren't what around here and number four. Yeah we've also got more carrier -- fifth. Can't tell you how many people I know curse it means he on a daily basis. And if you. Want to get a really good phone and don't wanna be stuck. With a particular carrier you can pick a carrier that you trust in and find a -- there we pretty much guarantee you'll. Find an injury from the -- like at this point. Right I mean different payers have different service or levels service in different areas and just being able -- -- she use the one the works best in your area. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The fifth and final reason that answer is better than the iPhone. Were open. -- Android is open I should say. Yeah -- open source. Open everything they -- we give a lot of lot of flexibility there -- I mean it you can start with you know the ease of -- You convert most phones Brett and the fact that you are okay with that -- if they're okay with that they let you put Rudy you know apps for -- phones in the marketplace the official. Who -- but it has not yet usually a couple of months after the phone comes -- -- you'll likely find the source code floating around the Internet. You know -- just making it really easy and -- and we can denied from the manufacturers and from Google Stanley -- you know you bought the phone -- some fun with it. -- -- you want break it we don't care. You'll never be something like that from Apple note that we. So also -- the marketplace is is open these sort of approval process you know you can he can't get anything through their particular get a lot of stuff they don't sort of put any kind of morality restraints on -- or you know if you -- release a web browser like opera. You can do that whereas on Apple and I found they don't want you to release what rather as that are really wanted to duplicate any personally -- authority. House and -- mean if if if you find that the marketplace that's still too restrictive you can also go around it. We've got multiple marketplaces we talked about you know -- -- have been their -- marketplaces like Verizon. We've got web based marketplaces. We've also got with the new and Amazon marketplace that with becoming few and -- If you have an app that you wanna get out there I mean you can just develop and -- -- decay on a server somewhere in dispute -- download that install the and -- the APK -- street onto their phone without even have to bother with the marketplace but they recommend -- that openness. Scenario. You know if -- your own reasons Lander is better. Send money and and will read tomorrow's show and -- analysis at cnet.com. And now we're gonna run through pretty quickly as a rant time here are some notable Apple leases on Mandarin this week. There was. People they go -- actually the Cara sweet that lets you control your. -- storm annexed he Lagos system which is pretty cool I. Have the system and unity and write programs in the computer to control what it does have another. Option for that. So cool. We both -- got an app called tango. Which is some video chat. Cross platform -- the version on the net food and there you connect chapter for into the Android phone -- -- with your friends on iPhone. And it you know free app that -- lets you work over. Three G and Wi-Fi which -- -- there Brecht. And it'll and it works on phones with only one camera as well so if you just wanna like show your BB two you know. Someone else they -- Steve that someone who's related to the hopefully. That's the M wine which is why now. That lets users enter -- having for dinner won't make some recommendations about winds which would pair well that -- this week. Did Steve thing here actually is not so the -- app itself so I can like that. It's this is an Adobe air out. One of the first ones beliefs so. If you're into an error in -- check at a map -- that. And the last step we've got is that tweaked it. We've actually just hit the market even though the that's been in beta for a couple of on -- about two months now. I've been using it in the first data. -- basically it rolls Twitter FaceBook foursquare. Google whatever but Google -- Of almost a year social network suited to one client allows you to and a you know blacked -- updates to all of them are specific ones are you know get all of your updates from all of your friends and all your social and expert. -- -- -- the laugh when we get there. Cool checked that out. I'm -- finally we got some email from Carl. Who. You know basically run as soon to tell us about tweet deck and that his -- says -- -- that come out he had been using each piece he Pete. But so I have not actually use them needs TC phone. But he's pretty excited that we take -- out. Even though he doesn't actually like it on his PC. And density goes on to talk about Adobe air. And he's -- a couple things about her sweater if there's any way to run. Air apps for and -- on the desktop since there is sort of a desktop air client as any way to taken Ingrid. One and run it on. The desktop. So don't know what -- answers that is. I'm thinking out of the box probably not you colonized India -- a pulls the -- -- -- -- and -- -- senators are talented but. I'm thinking also the internals are probably the internals of the package are probably pretty similar so -- thumb. Hacker with some time on it and could probably figure out some sort of a wait. -- the code and every packet brands and -- out. But -- They in the major difference here is gonna be when you actually exports your application from whatever programming. Using -- to build them this is gonna be. A -- finance if you want desktop or mobile. And that's gonna be the primary difference between -- file. I heard and and so he he also sort of indicates. You know hate to me is the desktop. Air apps on my phone. I think. Probably advance release -- -- -- term is no because they have to be packaged as a PK is which is -- and the installation format and then he wants to know we're gonna release day -- version of CNET TV. -- and and all sound that is state funerals of that appearances -- show us of thanks for listening if you want send -- email you mean not that into Red -- -- at cnet.com follows on Twitter. In or -- or watch the live show every week at CNET dot -- last lives last Android atlas. Com and you can find the show and all sorts of integrated blog posts that are blogs that are pronouncements in under an atlas. So that's minute thanks for joining us. Are joining me and on. And Europe plug your. Blogger or any other. -- -- rule. Most of what I -- up on the -- take Blunkett cars that cnet.com. We talk about cars and car technology and you know football me on Twitter. And do an anti -- -- both. Awesome cool I see after. Coming on and -- next week.
