First Look: eMachines T5226

The eMachines new T5226 desktop is powerful enough to run Windows Vista smoothly; we just wish it offered more-compelling hardware for the money.

[ background music ] >> Hi I'm Rich Brown, senior editor for CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the eMachine's 5226. As you can see, this is a nice looking budget system. Nice clean lines on the front, you can probably put it in any room in the house. Now on the front you'll see a standard def DVD burner up top, there's actually a spare bay right here if you want to put another optical drive here. There's also a full fledged media card reader right here in the middle. [inaudible] it's a pretty straight forward PC, although we found it's a little bit under spec for its price. The key flaw is the Intel Pentium D925 chip. You can find a faster dual core chip from AMD for about the same price. So the Intel holds it back on performance just a little bit. Otherwise though we found the system runs Vista home premium pretty reliably. We don't have any real big complaints about its overall performance. There's a gig of memory, a nice two hundred fifty gigabyte hard drive, integrated graphics, so you're not gonna get great gaming performance. But as you can see, there's a fair amount of expandability, including a PCI Express graphics slot. And that's pretty much the deal with this system. It's a basic budget box, so there's really not that much to it. [ background music ] Anybody looking for a basic computer for web browsing, doing email, basic word processing, pretty much what you're looking for here. So I'm Rich Brown, this is the eMachines T5226. ^M00:01:11 [ music ]
