Tap That App: Chow Thanksgiving Dinner Coach

2:42 /

Don't panic! Preparing Thanksgiving dinner is a snap with this easy-to-use app that helps you stay organized while you plan, shop, and cook a delicious meal. And it's free.

Hi, everyone, I'm Molly Wood and welcome to Tap that App, the show where we cover the hottest apps out there for your mobile doohickeys. This week, it's all about Thanksgiving here in the U.S., and for many folks, it's the time of year when you start to completely panic. Maybe you've never cooked a turkey before, maybe grandma's coming and she's going to judge your gravy. You need help. Well, our sister site, Chow dot com, has created an app called the Thanksgiving Dinner Coach, it is free, for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Now I downloaded the coach onto my iPad, because I like to use it for cooking ... hopefully an iPad app is next. Also, speaking of cooking, thanks to Chow for letting me shoot this in their test kitchen, I am never leaving. Anyway, the Dinner Coach app lets you choose from nine recipes here, pretty basic Thanksgiving fair, nothing that is going to scare off your picky eater friends. You can delete whichever recipes you dont think youll use, except for the Turkey, so vegetarians, you might want to look elsewhere. Then, the app creates an entire shopping list for you -- I like this part, it includes all the gear you'll need. Whatever you already have, just tap it, and it goes away. Next up, you get a schedule that will organize your cooking and make sure you get everything done on time -- like, what to make the day before and how long it will take. Now, there are some drawbacks -- you have to use these recipes, you can't choose from the entire Chow database of recipes, which would be super cool. If you want to customize a bit more, check out something like iFeast: Thanksgiving, in the App store. Or combine it with the Turkey Recipes app, which gives you 38 turkey recipes. And I'd love it if you could email the shopping list, maybe to print out or just to share with your spouse or someone who's shopping for you. But if you're new to turkey dinner or just like things made easy, the Thanksgiving Dinner Coach is dead simple, easy to use, and free. So hopefully your stress level will be low when Aunt Alice starts criticizing your house-cleaning. Just have a sip of brandy-apple punch and be thankful for what you've got.
