First Look: Canon EOS Rebel XS

1:49 /

The Canon EOS Rebel XS is a new entry-level digital SLR that provides an update on the older EOS Rebel XTi in the body of the new XSi.

>> [ music ] ^m00:00:03 Hi I'm Lori Grunin, senior editor with CNET dot com and this is the Canon Rebel XS. We haven't reviewed this yet, it's the first we've seen it, Canon's sitting in the other room waiting for hit back, but I'd thought I'd bring you a preview of what you'd expect from Canon's new entry level model. It replaces the XTi which is still selling pretty well and although they haven't finalized the price yet as of this video, it should be priced about the same as the XTi is selling now; which puts it competitive with models like the Nikon G60 and the Sony Alpha dSLRH100. The specs are pretty similar to those as well, it's a 10 megapixel, it ships with the Canon 18 to 55 IS lens, and the body is identical to the Rebel XSi. In terms of features the XS is reduced to a 7 point AF system from the XSi's 9 point and actually the XTi also had a 9 point auto focus. Although the 7 point auto focus is a step down from the XTi, it does have several features which are a step up from that, that it takes from the XSi; wide view shooting for one, it's lighter, and it has a longer battery life because it uses the higher capacity battery that you'll find in the XSi. As a matter of fact, all of the accessories from that camera are compatible with this one. And although the body is identical to the Rebel XSi, it does have a smaller LCD that's 2 and a half inches versus 3 inches. Inside it has a DIGIC III processor so although it has the same sensor as the XTi, you pretty much expect to see different image quality out of it. Better or worse? You'll have to wait for our review to tell you. I'm Lori Grunin and this is the Canon Rebel XS. [ music ]
