Behind Ello hype, a Facebook rebellion brews
There's a new network for people who want to say goodbye to Facebook.
I'm Bridget Carey, and this is your CNET update.
If you're in the mood to explore a new social network, say hello to Ello.
This social network is a little more than a month old, and it's still in its beta phase, but over the past couple of days it's seen a massive spike in interest from people who are.
Curious about the invitation only network.
Ello says there have been as many as 45,000 invite requests to the site per hour.
Why?
Well it seems there's a Facebook rebellion brewing.
The whole premise of Ello is that it won't collect your information for advertising.
In fact there will be no ads on the site.
That's a refreshing concept when you realize Facebook profits from your data.
Downloading a separate Facebook messenger ap also stirred up plenty of annoyance.
And users are pushing back against Facebook's requirements to use legal names.
And you layer that altogether?
Suddenly people want to jump the Facebook ship.
But, Ello is not a real Facebook replacement.
It's just a place to post some texts and photos.
Like a Tumbler blog.
And similar to Twitter, you can use an @ symbol to mention other users, and you follow someone's posts, but they don't have to follow you back.
You can sort people into two feeds, friends and noise, but they don't know which you've chosen form them.
And if you want your friends to join you, you have to send them an invite code.
It's also still a very glitchy website with a search that doesn't work.
It's hard to tell if Ello will survive.
It's not something to get too excited about yet but this sudden spike in popularity shows people are hungry for something different.
Meanwhile, Facebook seems to working on new features and by new features,.
I mean copying Google Plus.
Some users are noticing that their Facebook app automatically creates a slideshow of photos from a recent trip.
Facebook is just picking out highlights, so you can make one big slideshow of your vacation.
Several people are sharing videos of this feature as reported by The Next Web and Android Police.
Google plus already has this feature.
It's called Auto Awesome Stories.
And it picks what it thinks are the best photos from your trip.
Skipping over duplicates or out of focus shots.
But if you'd rather capture a vacation through an extreme action video camera there are new models of the GoPro you may want to check out.
The GoPro Hero4 is the company's new flagship camera.
It's roughly the size of a Zippo lighter.
It's twice as powerful as the pervious model.
Allowing you to capture more frames per second for smoother video.
The black model cost 500 dollars.
One step down is the silver model, but comes with a touch screen on the back for the price of 400 dollars.
That your tech news update.
