Become an Android Ice Cream Sandwich pro
Hey there, everyone.
I'm Jessica Dolcourt from CNET, and congratulations on your new smart phone software.
Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich, as it's more commonly called, is a major update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Now, I already walked you through some of the bigger changes in my Ice Cream Sandwich video, and I showed you Android Beam in a separate video.
So, right now I'm gonna show you how to get the most out of your phone with even more Ice Cream Sandwich tips and tricks, and you will be a pro.
So, the fastest way to set an alarm is not through your clock app.
It is by tapping the clock widget on your home screen.
The fastest way to get to your settings is also not through the apps that I have applied here to the home screen.
It is by pulling down the notification menu and tapping the settings.
Likewise, the fastest way to uninstall an app is not through the settings.
It is by grabbing the app, holding and pressing until you see the home screen, and pulling up to the button that says Uninstall, and did you know that you can swipe away individual items that you don't wanna see?
There are 3 places in the Ice Cream Sandwich that you can do this.
You can do it in the drop down notifications menu, you can do it in the list of recent apps, and you can do it with your browser tabs.
Next, I'm gonna tell you how to disable things that you might not wanna see.
For example, what if you don't like auto shortcuts?
Where the application automatically pops up on your home screen just after you download it from the market place.
You can go in to the settings, and undo that.
Also, what if you don't wanna see a pre-loaded software?
Like this Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus has a couple of their apps.
Well, you can go in to the settings and disable apps.
It won't completely remove them, but it will remove the icons, and did you know that Ice Cream Sandwich will automatically upload photos to Google Photos which is also known as Picasa.
If you don't want that uploaded, you can also change that in the settings.
Here's another neat trick in Ice Cream Sandwich.
You can plainly tell people to buzz off when they call you by sending a text response.
Here's how you do it.
Somebody calls you and simply drag the icon over to the texting icon, and you can use one of the preset responses or you can even add your own.
Back in the browser, I'm gonna show you how to load something up now to read it later.
Basically, it's as simple as loading up your page, going to the settings and clicking offline viewing in the settings menu.
For the hands down fastest way to do anything in the browser, you need to add Quick Controls.
You simply go to settings, select Labs from the menu and enable Quick Controls, then you just press and hold on the right of any website, and you'll see quick and easy access for your tabs, for the URL, and for the settings, and now we've come to one of my favorite features, screen shots.
Now, Ice Cream Sandwich enables this by default.
Even though other Android phones had it too.
Here's how you do it on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
You're gonna simultaneously press the power button, and hold down on the lower volume control, say a little prayer, 'cause sometimes you get the volume instead, you press, you hold, and boom.
You've got a screen shot.
Panorama may be all the rage, but I think that the best hit in camera feature is being able to take a still shot while you're shooting a video.
You simply start the video, you press the screen while you're shooting and boob.
A still will go directly into your gallery.
Now as fun as that is, the best party trick that you can do with the camera on here, is apply goofy faces.
It's not practical at all, but it will make people laugh.
Before you start the video, you go in to settings, find effects, and then you can choose from all these silly faces like squeeze, big eyes, big nose, big mouth.
It's great.
Anyway, that's all I've got for you this time.
