Apple Time Capsule
>> Dong: Hello, this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com and I have with me today Apple's new Time Capsule; this is a wireless
router and network storage combo device. The Time Capsule share exactly the same design and look as the Apple Extreme Bay Station
but about 30% larger. The extra space is for it to host an internal hard drive which is to be shared between network users. The
Time Capsule comes in 500GB and 1TB versions and that cost $299 then $499 respectively. These are very high prices for what you get.
The hard drive is completely locked in and you won't be able to replace it by yourself. You can, however, plug another external
hard drive into the USB port on the back of the device to increase the storage. The port can also be used to host a printer. Apple's
Time Capsule has only 3 network ports, one less than most non Apple routers. Like the Apple Extreme Bay Station, the Time Capsule offers
true dual band wireless end; this means it can operate simultaneously in both 2.4GH and 5GH frequencies; this allows it to support
virtually any existing wireless networking clients. In our testing the Time Capsule offer a very good wireless performance in the
5GH frequency, however, in 2.4GH frequency and network storage performance could be better compared to others. It also lacks a lot
of networking and network storage features. For example, you can't make it work as an iTunes or Media server to stream content to
other devices; this is sort of ironic because Apple is the maker of iTunes. You can not either make the Time Capsule to filter websites
or web services based on different criteria. Though designed to be a backup solution out of the box the Time Capsule only works well
with Apple's Time Machine a feature available only in OSX 10.5 or later. Other versions of OSX and Window user we need to find another
application to use the Tine Capsule as a backup storage. Due to the device slow performance the backup drive could take a long time
even when the computer is connected to it using a network cable. Overall the Time Capsule can make a good and simple wireless network
with built-in simple network storage. For its price, however, you can find many other solutions that offer better performance and
a lot more features. For more information on the Time Capsule check out our review at CNET.com. My name again is Dong Ngo and this
has been the first look at the new Time Capsule from Apple.
