Photos: Exotic cars
The stuff of calendars and posters, exotics are cars you will rarely see in real life. Lucky indeed is the individual who gets to see a Bentley Continental GT Speed or a Spyker C8 Aileron drive by on the street. We've gone through our auto show photographs to select the rarest of the rare.
The Reventon is based on the Murcielago, but it uses extensive carbon fiber for the body, with a stealth fighter design. But it's not just for show, as its powerplant is a 6.5-liter 12-cylinder engine putting out 650 horsepower.
After four years of production, McLaren decides to make the SLR topless. This is the standard McLaren SLR in roadster form, so it has the same engine as its hardtop sibling. That would be a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8, which puts out 626 horsepower.
Porsche pulled out all the stops with the GT2, making it the fastest production Porsche 911 to date. Its engine is only a 3.6-liter boxer six-cylinder, but twin turbos and some serious tuning have it making 530 horsepower. In the GT2, that gives it a 3.7-second 0-to-62-mph time and a top speed of 204 mph.
The soft-top version of Alfa Romeo's gorgeous 8C, the Spider gets the same 4.7-liter 440-horsepower engine as the coupe and adds an electro-hydraulic-controlled textile roof. Only 500 models of the convertible will be produced.
The 430 Scuderia is based on the F430 model, but gets tuned and upgraded for the track. Ferrari uses carbon fiber components to lighten its load by 220 pounds. The 430 Scuderia uses the same 4.3-liter V-8 engine as the F430, but the Scuderia's superior tuning and lower weight let it equal the legendary Enzo's lap times around Ferrari's test track.
The face-lifted baby Lambo weighs 44 pounds less than the previous Gallardo and produces 18 percent fewer emissions. Its 560-horsepower 5.2-liter V-10 is more powerful than that in the current Gallardo and is enough to catapult the LP560-4 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. The LP in the car's name stands for "Longitudinale Posteriore," which refers to the longitudinally, mid-mounted positioning of the engine.
The mid-engine Spyker C8 Aileron builds on the success--and the platform--of its C8 Spyder predecessor. In keeping with the car's name, Spyker imbues the Aileron with aviation-inspired design cues from its turbine-shaped air-inlet scoops to its "Aeroblade" wheels with carbon-ceramic brakes. Like the Spyder, the Aileron is powered by an Audi V-8 engine, giving it 420 horsepower.
The C16 Speedster is based on a Corvette platform, but gets completely new bodywork and an engine built by Callaway. This engine, a 6.2-liter V-8, generates 700 horsepower, giving the car a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds.
The "Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermes" (the Fbg stands for the Rue du Faubourg in Paris where the fashion designer is based) garnishes the "standard" Veyron with a bespoke paint job, some Hermes-branded wheels, door handles inspired by the design of Hermes travel bags, and a selection of onboard Hermes luggage.
Following on the debut of the Gran Turismo, the Italian automaker ups the ante with the Gran Turismo S. The curvaceous coupe comes with a 440-horsepower V-8 engine, giving it a top speed of 183 mph and making it the fastest production Maserati ever.
Sessanta means 60 in Italian, signifying Ferrari's 60th anniversary. The 612 Sessanta is a modified 612 Scaglietti, Ferrari's luxury/performance coupe. It has Sessanta badging all the way around and a unique two-tone paint job. Although the 612 Sessanta has luxury appointments, it still has Ferrari's performance characteristics, including the F1 transmission and a big, 6-liter 12-cylinder engine.
Bentley took its Continental GT, squeezed out a bit more power, and added the "Speed" label to it. Bentley ran the horsepower of the GT's W12 engine up to 600. That horsepower translates to a top speed of 202 mph and 0-to-60-mph time of 4.3 seconds.
